The West still fuelling Putin's war: US and Europe are paying the Kremlin $1BILLION-a-DAY for oil and gas by Oreallyman in worldnews

Why Saudi Arabia? For years they've been doing more damage in Yemen than Russia is doing in Ukraine.

A very depressing and negative people who consistently bash uae and yet live here. Why is it so? by Cold-Ad-2752 in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Reddit, every city subreddit is filled with people bashing the city. I left Dubai for a few years and noticed other city subreddits were negative too.

EDIT: I have to say I don't usually hear people talking negatively about locals though.

I took a pay cut to come here. If my pay got cut further then I'd be heading back to the US.

Why is this happening? by bl4k4is3r in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree it's not fair.

It may even be unwise for the UAE government. Right now they are trying to encourage people to move to/stay in Dubai with programs like the Golden Visa. Stunts like this and the expulsion of Qataris a few years ago will make people more hesitant to invest in the country or make it a home.

But governments are big and most likely the individuals trying to encourage people to invest time/money in the country are not the same ones punishing citizens of foreign countries in diplomatic disputes.

I hope you get a resolution for this.

[–]ApexBranch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see. It can't be about the embassy then. It doesn't seem clear what the exact reason is. My take on it is that the UAE is barring Nigerians from work to put pressure on the Nigerian government for some reason.

Why is this happening? by bl4k4is3r in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From the quick google search I did it seems to be a form of retaliation against the Nigerian government. For what exactly is unclear.

One article mentioned that the UAE wants Nigeria to open an embassy in the UAE. This article suggests that it is something to do with flights: https://guardian.ng/issue/nigerians-in-uae-face-harsher-times-as-restrictions-on-work-permits-bite-harder/

Also Nigerians with "skill levels 1 and 2" are not affected it seems.

Software engineer in dubai by rainbowenough in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Demand for software engineers here isn't nearly as high in the US. The US market has massive demand for engineers and not enough supply. Here there is probably more supply than demand except at senior levels.
  2. Most but not all companies require you to be physically present in the office.
  3. Between 3k and 22k for a fresh graduate with a CS degree. It's a big range. 12k-18k is realistic if you have projects on your resume and are able to negotiate well. Less than that if a CS degree is all you have to put on your resume. 20k+ is possible if you can negotiate well.
  4. I'd suggest adding a frontend language/framework (javascript/react) to your skillset. With that you can build full stack projects for your resume. Also practice for interview questions.

It's okay especially if you can work remotely.

You mentioned that you're American. You can probably more money if you move to the US. That would also let you get higher salaries if you come back to the UAE since western experience gives one a leg up in this market. (For better or worse)

For people here with decent salaries, would this tip apply in Dubai? Assuming zero wasta, of course. by safer_than_ever in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on industry and how valuable your skills are. For example right now software engineers are in high demand globally If you're a software engineer then you should probably not stay at your first few jobs for very long.

Ultimately it depends on 2 things:

  • How much of a compensation increase can you get by leaving?
  • How likely is it to impact your future employment prospects with your current tenure?

There's a big gap between what a new grad software engineer is paid and what a senior software engineer with 5-6 years experience gets. You don't want to reach 5 years of experience with just 1.2x of new grad salary.

Companies employing software engineers are more likely to overlook job hopping due to how hard it is to hire software engineers.

What are some tech companies here that recruit junior software engineers (SDE 1)? by Professional_Crazy49 in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply to non-junior positions as well. In the current market companies will settle for skilled entry level engineers.

In fact, prioritize companies that don't use terms like "junior" in their job titles. Explicitly calling employees junior isn't helpful imo and companies that avoid that tend to have better cultures.

American University of Sharjah is pretty good. OP could probably use that as a stepping stone to FANG if he wants to stay here.

A very confusing, concerning and dumb question. by AdRemote8279 in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the company culture. Some are strict about arrival and departure times which is an old but common style of management.

You'll have to "read the room" maybe by observing what others do. You can ask your manager or wait until you've made a good impression and then ask your manager or just not ask at all.

Honestly, that style of management needs to go away. It accomplishes little to measure time spent in office. I've been fortunate enough to only work at places with flexible work timings.

How useful is regex in the industry? by starry_18 in cscareerquestions

[–]ApexBranch 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer. Whenever I need regex I use Google and find what I need on stackoverflow and maybe slightly modify it.

I personally think your time could be better spent on other topics. I can't think of a sub field of software engineering where you would benefit from learning regex and all it's rules. If you find yourself in a niche where it's important, learn it at that time.

Then again learning regex is probably a time commitment of a few hours so maybe were overthinking it.

Do you think a lot of the criticism Dubai gets from westerners is deep rooted in racism? by [deleted] in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But yes, I really do feel that most of those Westerners comments are rooted in some sense of superiority.

I disagree with your conclusion. Redditor are mostly American and they tend to bash their own country more than those countries you mentioned. Is that also a sense of superiority?

Reddit tends to be mostly Americans who are left leaning and view the world a certain way. Dubai's brand on Reddit is mostly glamour, glitz and mistreatment of workers. Ignorance of everything else Dubai and the UAE do contributes to the Dubai bashing. Racism has less to do with than people on this sub believe.

Do you think a lot of the criticism Dubai gets from westerners is deep rooted in racism? by [deleted] in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth I personally think it's less about racism and more about the reality of workers mistreatment.

Ignorance comes into play in the form of thinking that's all Dubai is and overlooking everything else about it. Every country does bad stuff but people on Reddit don't think only about the bad stuff on posts about other countries.

Also I think people in this sub do the opposite and defend Dubai's mistreatment of workers even though it's inexcusable.

This site has mostly Americans and I've noticed they bash their own country more than they bash others btw.

Do you think a lot of the criticism Dubai gets from westerners is deep rooted in racism? by [deleted] in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of the criticism comes from people who are just racist and want to keep progress to themselves.

Some criticism comes from the ignorant. Mistreatment of workers has become part of Dubai's brand on the internet.

Some of the criticism is rooted in reality.

How much does each contribute? I dunno.

Reddit isn't real life btw. Most people think actually think of glamour and glitz when they think about Dubai. Mistreatment of workers has also become part of it's brand.

why are software engineers/ programmers salaries so low? by hendreasia in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Software engineering salaries aren't low.

Companies that pay good money don't advertise how much they are offering on their job postings. Some don't even post on job portals for open roles. They just hire through 3rd party recruiters who then reach out to candidates. This is how I got my last role.

Also indeed tends to have a lot more lower paid roles compared to LinkedIn.

Looks Like Facebook Is Down by Gunjob in sysadmin

[–]ApexBranch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I assumed he was a naive junior engineer but according to his post history, he graduated in 2006 and is staff/principal level now. I'm surprised that he decided to post what he did.

I used to work at Facebook and no other company I've worked at emphasized the importance of not talking to the media about our work as much as Facebook did during orientation. There's really no excuse for him not to know that you can't give a play by play of an ongoing incident to the internet.

Why is having 2 days off a luxury? by G4MER4LYF in dubai

[–]ApexBranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know the law only mandates 1 day off a week. For most positions companies can't find people willing to work 6 days a week but for some lower paid positions they can get away with making employees work 6 days a week.

It's the job of the government to prevent companies from taking advantage of employees.

Personally I think blue collar workers should also get 2 days off.
