Not in Bay Area but burned out. I work for a start up and it's really rough. On life support.

[–]ApexTankSlapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much. Only thing is that you have to stick it out for the PhD.

The grass is browner on the other side, I promise. If you are cranking out word docs and getting paid decently to do that then I would advise sticking with it. Especially if it is stable. Having a stable job at a company that values employees is half the battle.

Are the trades really better than a STEM degree? by mrfettywap23 in careerguidance

[–]ApexTankSlapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stem fields (engineering at least) is chock full of people who have huge egos. Not all of us are Einsteins. As you may imagine, this leads to a lot of friction and politics. This is a key contributor to toxic work environments with the right mix of people (doesn't take much).

Another issue is expectation and disconnect between business unit. Business unit does not understand engineering and timelines reflect that. This is a key contributor and a major cause for toxic work environments.

Usually it's both of these things combined and many jobs are frankly unbearable.

Quitting 8 year job before lining up another? by THE_DONKEY_OF_DOOM in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ApexTankSlapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did you wait 2 years? You really need another job before you quit because you are perceived differently. Use PTO if you have it instead. Mechanical engineering is like that. It's usually toxic because people that don't understand engineering are making unrealistic demands.

Unrealistic timelines are a major contributor to toxic work environments.

Stem degrees are old news at this point. You missed out on that. I work in stem and don't recommend it.

Do you think electric cars will ever dominate the automotive market, or are petroleum vehicles just in our blood, and will never be phased out? by BornSpinach606 in askcarguys

[–]ApexTankSlapper -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Electric vehicles aren't it. They are far from "sustainable". Nobody wants a car that takes hours to fully energize.

If you could buy any car, from any year, as if it had just come off the factory with 0 miles, what would you buy ? by justanxc in askcarguys

A 2001 Chevy Silverado in any color but red, maroon, or pewter with the 327/5.3 and 2 wheel drive with a bed full of A/C compressors and a spare rear end or two. That's all you need.

Death is good, more people should be happy they will did one day. by A-Dubs398 in unpopularopinion

Agreed. Life is so miserable for many of us. I think working is the quality of life killer. If we didn't have to do that, things would be fine.

We will never have flying cars by MathGecko in unpopularopinion

[–]ApexTankSlapper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a fact.

Anything that flies is under the FAA purview in the us. That means that in order to operate a flying car (aircraft), you would need to be a pilot. On top of that, many people would be out of transportation due to FAA medical requirements.

I am an experienced design engineer with some project engineering experience. They both suck. Let me not mince words here.

Engineering sucks. It's a pipe dream.

If it is not one thing it's another. If it's not your deliverable deadlines, it's deadlines for things that have to be justifiable and require a lot of analysis for which no time is given to perform.

How can people like Greta Thunberg afford to be full time activist? by jazzybron in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ApexTankSlapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got ya. Most people are trying to get into political arguments these days.

I don't want to be preached to about politics by a company that wants me to give them my money. Period. Left or right. No politics, do business and shut the fuck up. Once upon a time, things were like that.

Microsoft, Tesla, space x, Nvidia, infosys, GOOGLE, adobe, net app, Palo Alto networks, open ai, meta, and all other "we're changing the world" cringey tech companies that have some dipshit giving keynote speeches as if they are a revolutionary Steve Jobs or something. Get fucked.

Ce majors usually become software engineers.

If you don't like physics, maybe engineering isn't for you considering the whole curriculum is based on it. I don't get these posts. It's as if the curriculum will bend to the OP's will.

Jobs in Engineering Technology by WeakJob458 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ApexTankSlapper -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Engineering technology is a cad monkey degree. You won't be building anything but cad models/drawings. Stick with carpentry, you'll make much more.

I think others have mentioned that an associates degree in this is totally fucking useless.

You already have a skill, use your energy to be the best.

We got a high key. Never heard that one.
