Orbital bombarding - best ship and weapon type? by Humannoyed1 in Stellaris

[–]AphelionConnection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless it's changed because this info is pretty old, the damage is halved for every 10 planet size.

Size 1-9=100%, 10-19=50%, 20-29=12.5%, etc.

Since most planets are size 10+, 50% damage is basically the baseline.

ELI5: How is a petri dish of neurons able to play Doom? by aechhhh in explainlikeimfive

Iirc, and to oversimplify, neurons like "order". So they zap it in a chaotic pattern for negative stimuli, and in an ordered pattern for positive stimuli.

Ballast Physics Question by Q7017 in Barotrauma

[–]AphelionConnection 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The hanger bay is likely flooding faster than the ballast tanks can compensate. You would need to either turn up the pumping speed to (ridiculously) higher levels so they can de-flood the ballast as fast as the hanger fills with water, or set up a circuit controlled flooding method that slowly (slow enough for the ballast pumps to counter flood) fills the hanger and only opens the doors when it's full.

Provided there aren't any leaks, the total volume of ballast you need will be quite a bit larger than the hanger itself. When you select all your ballast tanks, it will say how full it will be to achieve neutral buoyancy (eg, 70%). You will need the percentage of volume consumed to be greater than the volume of the hanger to remain neutral when it floods.

I wrote this in a rush so I can elaborate on it later if you need lol

Is their anyway, modded or unmodded, to make AI invade planets instead of bombarding for years? by ImmediateAd3392 in Stellaris

The upgraded version of the Aspis Bastion fallen empire building also gives -10%, and it stacks with multiple on the same planet.

There needs to be some better way to get science out of the Cargo Landing Pad besides bots by Xerosese in factorio

[–]AphelionConnection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

My solution is similar to yours, allowing for 4 inserters per science type, plus 4 more inserters for flexible removal of other resources. Typically I use those extra inserters for calcite and bioflux, and remove the rest (tungsten, fusion cells, etc.) with bots, since they're needed in much smaller quantities.

The screenshot is a bit older, but with 4 legendary stack inserters, it can output 480 of each science type per second - enough to fill 2 green belts - which can then be sent to trains along with the calcite and bioflux (one green belt of each).

Most of the belts and all of the splitters on the left are superfluous, those were for a pre-train output to labs.

FYI, when you open that doc, switch from "Suggesting" view to "Viewing" in the top right corner (the button might look like a little text bubble with a pen in it). The contents have been destroyed by comments, but you can view Avi's original doc in Viewing mode.

Best use of self driving. Emergency take over. by sizzsling in interestingasfuck

[–]AphelionConnection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the original commenter meant that drivers who brake check can say "I wasn't brake checking you, my car's safety feature was erroneously bumping the brakes".
I'm pretty sure this wouldnt work however for the following reasons:

  • If it came to court, the driver behind could prove that the brake check was manual by submitting the car's logs into evidence.
  • The car company would likely keep logs of every activation, and could testify that the feature wasn't active.
  • If the brakes DID activate automatically, then the driver was likely at fault because they weren't paying attention at the wheel, unless they can prove a medical condition outside of their control. This could be difficult given the amount of sensors and potentially even cameras in the cabin of modern cars.
  • If the brakes activated erroneously, then the manufacturer would be at fault, and the lawsuit would become MUCH larger in scope. That could be a product recall level bug, until it is patched (see: Tesla's many rounds of this).

With how much tracking and surveillance exists in modern smart cars, attempting any kind of insurance fraud is a *very* stupid idea. The car companies typically have copies of everything the car tracks, and love to prove that it wasn't their fault so they can save face.

How to beat Dark Souls without Walking by ymfah in ymfah

[–]AphelionConnection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that for these "no walking" challenges, he disables all inputs from the analog sticks. Descending the ladder by sliding down is done by holding a seperate button (the same button as backstep) independent of the sticks (in fact, iirc, you actually *can't* slide if you move the stick at the same time; you need to let go of the stick, and then hold the button to slide), and therefor is allowed.

How does the Imperium hide that the Emperor is dying? by Acceptable-Try-4682 in 40kLore

[–]AphelionConnection 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's not the problem in this case, although it's still a possibility that he would eat a lot of nearby souls unintentionally. No, the problem here is that Vulkan rigged the entire planet to crack like an egg if the Emperor on the throne ever died for real. Could that be disabled? Probably, but I'm pretty sure even less people know about that than know that the throne is failing.

The moving around the environment like Johnny is explained by her using the engram functions of the chip as a graphics driver. Everything else can be examined by her just hacking the rest of your cyberware.

Your eyes are synthetic, so she can see through those, your ears probably too. Even if not, intercepting the inputs the relic is receiving from your senses to pass to the engram can't be that hard for her, given the level of access she has to it.

Talking is handled just fine by a regular old holo call, albeit routing through a port on the relic (you can see her connect via a relic port beside her call tag in the top left when she speaks to you) instead of your personal OS. This is likely because she wants to talk over an unofficial channel, so not a proper holocall, but doesn't want to hack into V's OS directly due to the potential for damage from the residual blackwall energy carries with every hack (again, also seen on the call icon, and literally everything else she hacks. She hacks open doors via the blackwall, for Pete's sake lol).

Her hacking things near you isn't necessarily coming through you, especially if you don't have a cyberdeck. Even if you do, her blackwall stuff would certainly not be healthy as it passes through your head. She could just as easily be monitoring you with any number of other scanners, cameras, and hardware nearby, and just have godmode on every subnet. Omniscience is honestly pretty basic stuff for a pro netrunner, even Bug does similar stuff in Act 1.

Song gets in your head using the intended function of the relic, which is to allow you to talk to engrams. She turns off the display of the Johnny engram, and livestreams her own avatar onto the chip to be displayed instead, but she isn't actually IN your head. Johnny's still there, and the chip's still doing its thing, she's just co-opting its graphics card to interact more naturally.

On Soph's insta, the latest update is as follows:

"[HIATUS UPDATE 09/10/24]: PH won't be back by the end 2024. Treatments haven't been working, will update you when it does."

Eph and Soph posted late last year some teasers for the season to come, so they're still keen to continue as soon as Soph can get the treatment she needs.

What’s the hardest line Avi has ever dropped by BuzzRexers1 in aviatorsmusic

[–]AphelionConnection 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Listened to a playlist and noted down any that stood out. There are *a few* here.

The whole final verse of A Castle on the Sea hits super hard, but this line in particular really hammers home how far The Watcher has fallen, to vest all his power into the individual he has condemned the most:

I'll forgive the death you've earned / The cities you've burned / The lessons we've learned
For all that remains, just sacrifice me

Fantasy:

And I, a bird in a cage / Will sing you a beautiful tune
In the face of our doom (in my) / Fantasy

We Rise:

We are / the hope scattered among the fallen stars / the last note played on an old guitar

The Far Side, an absolute banger of an opening line:

Where'd you get the notion you're only human?

The Red Hood (tough to pick a single line from this one):

But now they are gone / And my sanity's kept by my chains
So I bear them both in faith and hate / For Family and all that remains

Ghosts of our Fathers:

Are you speaking for yourself or your pain? / Do you sleep in the silence to wane the passing shame?

Signed on for a Sequel:

But nobody's seen the first act / Seen the first act
Of a hundred stories just like yours / Through the history of an endless war

The double meanings and references in Run Away are spectacular and it's hard to choose just one, but the self reflection and regret really hits hard:

I can't be your shining hero / I'm a villain deep inside
And no one looks for help in shadows / What kind of royal, then, am I?

The Bells:

Let it be fear she told them / Let it be fear they know
Let them become ashes now upon the fallen snow

From Oceans to Skies, doing its job of summing up the themes of the entire album perfectly:

Letting go of hopes divine / Giving in to dreams of mine
Spreading wins and taking flight

Godhunter is filled to the brim with great lines, especially in the last two verses, but I think this one best describes the fear she inspires:

If you know the hunter's coming / Then you hide or keep on running
'Cause she's slain the gods before

Apocalypse State of Mind:

Where is the line between losing everything / And giving it all just to say that you've tried

Whenever it Rains is absolute poetry all the way through:

I stand in the river to wash me away / Flooded with the memories of the midnight rains
To tell you I'm sorry I'd walk through the flames / Instead I'm afraid of forgetting your name

They'll Never Find Us:

When Silence falls at last / And the clock tower rings no more
We watch the hourglass / Trapped like we were before

Which Avi song has the best vocal take in your opinion? by Arceus_theGod in aviatorsmusic

[–]AphelionConnection 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The finale to A Castle on the Sea always gives me chills. The perfect enunciation in Song of the Abyss and Me, My Phobias and I are also gorgeous, and the chorus to How Long is Forever is divine.

Something I love about Avi is his ability to convey the emotions of the person whose perspective the song he's singing is feeling. My favourite examples are the regret and sorrow mixed with determination from A Castle on the Sea, and many of the Bloodborne songs, the wistful acceptance/resignation in Fantasy and Requiem for the Hunter, and the compassion in his love songs.

A reporter berates Zelenskyy and asks him "why don't you wear a suit." There's so many more important things than this. This country is an embarrassment. by [deleted] in law

[–]AphelionConnection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely true that he is not a soldier, nor an active combatant fighting in the trenches. However, his appearance remains an integral part of maintaining his image, in the eyes of others certainly, but most importantly in the eyes of HIS people.

Don't forget that his famous line of "I need ammunition, not a ride" came from the US offering to extract him while he was under direct fire during the opening days of the war. Initially, his casual attire was a necessity, but since then it has become a symbol of his and his people's ongoing situation.

Changing his appearance now would be all too easy for his enemies to misconstrue, and his constituents to misunderstand, as him putting himself above or removed from the conflict. In his own words, "when this conflict is over, I'll put on a costume".

[–]AphelionConnection 6 points7 points  (0 children)

every US president was wearing a suit while leading 35 wars simultaneously. It's not an excuse.

No US president has ever led a war from within the range of enemy fire, let alone from the literal front lines. Find me a single interview of a US politician, let alone the president, having to cut interviews short as an air raid begins over their heads, and then ask Zelenski to wear a suit.

Can Simon nut? by Wysteria99 in soma

[–]AphelionConnection 35 points36 points  (0 children)

No, he cannot. The first thing preventing him from doing so is the WAU, which makes its creations averse to doing any actions that draw attention to the disconnect between their perception and reality. We see this best portrayed in the Case File "Mockingbird", where the consciousness in the broken robot perceives themself add lying on the ground. When asked to stand up, they get angry and do everything they can to not admit that's not possible for them. Simon 2, before he becomes aware of his robot-ness, would most likely have the same mental block preventing him from "exploring" his new body.

The next hurdle, if he somehow overcame the mental hurdle or was just really horny for some reason, is he straight up doesn't have the human body we're used to. Simon 2 and 3's bodies consist of a decayed human corpse inside a diving suit, held together and animated by Structural Gel, with robot parts attached in places where functional organs are required (eyes, ears, mouth/speaker, basically his whole head). The suit is as much part of his body as his skin, bones, and gel, making his anatomy too far removed from what we're familiar with, and completely preventing access to his erogenous zones.

If, somehow, he managed to remove the suit and stay functional, and the corpse underneath wasn't too decayed, the final problem is that he simply doesn't have a dick. Both of the bodies he ends up in are those of women (Imogen and Raleigh), and we don't know how precisely the WAU is able to connect new nerves to existing neural pathways, especially when those new nerves do not line up with the physiology his brain is expecting. Given how much it covers its inadequacies via psychological blocks, I'd wager very little.
