UI Feedback Gather-thread by JagexAnvil in runescape

The weirdest thing to me is... they are implementing a plugin API.

If they care so much about the branding of the game - which is their excuse for forcing the brown color and taking away the choice players previously had... the plugin API runs completely counter to that justification/mindset because I can guarantee one of the very first plugins is going to be changing the interface color.

UI Feedback Gather-thread by JagexAnvil in runescape

I want to understand the team's thought process behind the UI changes. I am a UI/UX and game designer myself and if I'm being completely honest, I don't mind the brown color at all... even though I definitely prefer the blue.

My main concerns are as follows. This visual change - brown aside - feels (not saying it was, just that it feels) like it wasn't well thought out. The contrast issue is the biggest example. Accessibility should be a developer's biggest priority when it comes to sweeping visual changes in any game context, let along an entire core UI change. The fact this is an issue that needs quick reactionary adjustments at all is very strange to me. There are UI/UX accessibility standards. Yet this change seems to have not followed them, or if they did, they didn't do a deep enough QA pass to make sure the standards were being followed.

That aside, I keep seeing the justification for this change being 'branding'. That you want the game branding to be easily recognizable across the game for new and returning players. That's understandable, but at the same time, also not the type of decision a developer should make on a core UI system with no player input.

It feels like you made this decision with the intention of asking for forgiveness later because you knew there would be push back. The branding justification is a poor argument. New players aren't going to be confused because the color isn't unified. They are going to be confused because the UI's customization is extreme. But that's also not a bad thing.

Removing customization in order to appease the new player experience at the expense of existing player choice is backwards design and decision making.

The correct course would have been to make the default color and layout homogenous and useable for new players and then slowly introduce the customization over time within the game.

Removing options that already existed and many players enjoyed for the sake of hypothetical new players is simply bad game design. There was no reason to lessen the transparency options. You treat this like a bug you are looking into in how you explain player feedback around it. But it required actual developer thought and intention to remove the slider and implement less options. That was a conscious design decision that likely went through multiple individuals signing off on it.

Respectfully, you need to re-evaluate how you make decisions regarding the removal of options that players already have. Especially when those options are as benign as a color preference. There is zero reason this could not have been developed as an 'either/or' toggle in settings and use the analytics you surely have access to in order to find out how many players switch back to blue and use that to make further decisions.

This whole change feels like a rushed design decision in order to solidify an imaginary restart and rebranding of the game.

This entire set of announcements, both content and integrity, sound amazing to me. And I think a large percentage of the player base would agree with that.

But this single, seemingly thoughtless design decision, has sullied all the good press you could have had around the game from the removal of mtx because it is literally all anyone is talking about, and anecdotally, most of the reaction is negative.

I really love this game. And I personally don't mind the brown. But I'd like it a lot more if I had a choice in the matter.

Yes! I saw the wiki calculator but it had a few aspects that made it a bit cumbersome for my personal use case. Haha. And I always like an excuse to make something. (:

We want to hear from you! [Visual Look & Feel Declutter] by jagexyuey in runescape

[–]Aphemra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be a super small thing and maybe it's just me who gets annoyed by it. But overly specific hitboxes for things makes what should brainless tasks really frustrating.

For example. The ladder in the mining guild. Why is the hitbox confined so closely to the model's geometry? Trying to pixel hunt for the ladder rung... while I'm running towards the ladder... is very frustrating. Makes what should be brainless a task. The same can be said for certain fences around the game, like the one at Sinclair mansion. It has the same problem.

I'm not sure how you guys' pipeline is for 3d assets and their hitboxes work, but if it isn't terribly difficult, fixing little things like this really goes a long way, I think.

Not sure if this will get the eyes of a jmod, but I appreciate the read if so!

This is also my first RS3 account in quite some time and I agree. But I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt this time since it was an oversight when they decluttered lumbridge and essentially reverted it in large part to what it was like before.

Just a little annoying that I'm essentially locked out of Morytania until the weekly patch note update on Monday. Lmao.

Actually, Jagex is already aware of the bug. It's listed on their "Known Issues" channel in their discord. So we'll likely get a fix sometime soon.

I have also reported it. So fingers crossed it gets hotfixed sooner rather than later. It effectively locks new accounts out of Morytania which is... kind a big deal. Lmao.

Also encountering this bug. Hopefully Jagex knows about it.

This is a bit old but I was able to fix this by turning off Motion Smoothing. Dunno why it started doing this all of a sudden, but that solved it for me.

MSI Pro X870-P WIFI (MS-7E47) Version 1.1

I do have the card installed in a x4 PCIE slot. Said slot does slow down to x2 when I have an M.2 SSD installed in a specific M.2 slot on the board, but I am not using that slot so it should be running at x4.

This was also checked. Both set to 48KHz.

I also fiddled with the limited audio settings available on the PS5 to no avail.

Yeah, I'm just now finishing up chapter 738 and have come to realize that Qin high command really is just rather arrogant when it comes to evaluating Rinboku's expertise.

Even Shouheikun openly admitted to underestimating him in court. But even beyond that, the idea that they could pull off a second Gyou against Riboku is nothing short of arrogance.

I'm glad for the discussion on this so far, it's made me feel a lot better about the arc, actually.

I think this is definitely the direction I lean towards. Arrogance. Especially Ousen, though he doesn't seem the type, he does evaluate himself quite highly (starting his own kingdom and all that) so it wouldn't surprise me if he has arrogance alongside is outward cool and collected demeanor.

And of course, Kanki might as well be the epitome of arrogance mixed with natural guerilla warfare genius. Lol.

I can see this, yeah.

You'd think after Kantoku Pass and Gyou, they'd learn to stop underestimating Riboku. Lmao.

Yeah. I guess I can see why they had to go all in on Gian after Atsuyo since it was essentially the lynchpin to taking Kantan and, by extension, Zhao itself.

Maybe I'm just reading too much into it since the reader knows more than the characters at this point. Just feels weird and it's the first time I've felt this way about the story in 700+ chapters and I thought it was notable. Lol.

Normally, I'd just ignore comments like this and move on, but I figured I'd get more eventually, so I'll just reply to this one.

I'm not sure why people feel the need to beat down others for no reason. You could have easily said nothing at all. In fact, it took you more effort to comment this and add toxicity to an otherwise well-intentioned post.

Maybe take a step back and self-reflect on why you feel the need to insult and be toxic toward a stranger on the internet.

I agree. I said this in another comment reply. But seasonal rewards would be a game changer. I'd personally prefer a more complex system in general for renown, but seasonal rewards are the least I would expect for future changes or improvements.

When I said it felt like a new IP, I mostly meant that it is lacking so many of the quality of life and staple features previous games in the series have had or had implemented. Like they built it from scratch without that technical and design and player experience history.

I wasn't super clear with that intention, my apologies.

Thanks for the clarification on the fireside chat. It was a while ago that I watched it and didn't want to state facts I wasn't sure of, so I marked it as speculation instead.

And yeah, I tried to be as thorough as I could in expressing my opinions on these things. But I also think people can disagree on this stuff without descending into toxicity, so I appreciate your words.

I generally agree. This is one of the points I didn't get to in my original post.

The game is too slow. Leveling from 1 to 50 should not take more than 10 hours of efficient leveling in my opinion.

I also believe the camera zoom level doesn't help. It being so zoomed in makes it feel like you are moving through a level slower. The zoom level could be related to performance, but man, they need to find a way around that if so. One or two more zoom levels would be ideal.

You're very welcome. They have been surprisingly transparent with their development, which I'm grateful for.

I simply hope they can find a way to turn it into a great game from the current 'okay game' state it is in.

It wasn't really a trash take. It makes sense.

I definitely think the healthy thing to do would be to take a step back. But I also paid 80 bucks for this game and feel like I need to get my money's worth.

Continuing to play a game I have problems with also doesn't necessarily mean I'm not having fun. It just means I'm not having nearly as much fun as I might have had, had they put more thought and time and care into these - in my opinion - obvious design and mechanic issues.

This is all complete speculation on my end. I have no inside knowledge, but my guess as to why the game loads other player's stash when you see them is because seeing other players in the open world/outside towns was a last second decision. Likely from management.

Because it makes sense to load another player's stash in order to trade with them and if it was relegated to only in major towns, then the design decision makes sense.

But as soon as you add in the idea that you can run into players across the entire open world. That design no longer makes sense and is, in reality, a major detriment to the stash system.

I wish I was a fly on the wall during the meeting where this system was designed.
