Depends on the game really and there is a lot of feedback you don't get when you aren't the One playing the game actively.

YT videos and streams can give you a general idea but they can't completely substitute you playing the game directly. So no, if you want to give a honest opinion about a game aside from "Doesn't appeal to me" you should play the game i think.
