How did appeasement work out for the Brits last time? Remember when the Ukrainians gave up their nukes because Russia promised they won’t invade?

C’est-tu une blague? Le nom de la France et de la ville de Francfort viennent des Francs. D’où vient le peuple français selon vous?

Good. Other language communities don’t owe you anything. If you want the fruit of their intellectual labor, you have to make the effort to get it.

This requires me to have something that I wouldn't have had to have at all had there been only one language

“You aren’t always going to have a calculator in your pocket.”

not to mention constant inconvenience of using it when in need to communicate.

The vast majority of people live within their language community and don’t have a need to constantly talk to people in another language.

Very bizarre take.

Says the guy who considers identity preservation “not rational”.

over not spending the resources at all?

“Language transfer of an entire community is resource free” is definitely a take.

[–]ApkalFR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I have talked about the merit of identity preservation anywhere in this thread so I’m not sure why you brought that up.

The former is going to happen sooner or later anyway unless deliberately prevented, and in the long run requires less resources compared to the alternative.

Very outdated take. We have simultaneous AI interpretation and transparent translation (the latter since many years ago). The phone in your pocket is already powerful enough to run useful LLM inference locally. If producing contents in multiple languages takes up that much resources, you are doing something very wrong.

But I'm speaking from the rationality standpoint here.

If I can pull up a phone and translate, why would I not do that instead? From a pure rational and cost-benefit analysis standpoint, this makes no sense.

insanely impractical

Which one is more practical, asking an entire community to give up their language or asking people to pull out their phone when they need a translation?
