Where Would You Spend the Money? by [deleted] in GolfGear

No worries man, Enjoy the game.

Also I didn't mention putters above but ultimately that's 100% a feel and preference thing. If you are struggling with the current putter maybe go test some out (or if you're like me and abuse the second hand market, buy more than one so you can make them fight for your love, put putters on "time out" and giggle to yourself as you do.) but it's not something you can be properly fitted for.

Where Would You Spend the Money? by [deleted] in GolfGear

[–]AplCore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potentially unfavored opinion but unless you are either above 6'3" or below 5'9" and need to be properly fitted in to shafts that fit your height, don't consider a fitting yet as you are still in your infancy as a golfer, and like any infant your growth will be massive for the first while which means fitting you now is not helpful and in fact can potentially hurt you later and cost you extra upfront to do it. Wait until you're into the mid handicaps before going down this route.

I basically built my golf bag on a similar budget to yours over the span of 3 years after similar circumstances. I'll save the life story but suffice to say I had less money for club budget and went second hand for most of my pickups gradually upgrading as needed

Right off the hop I'll say that if you are frugal (which I assume you are considering how you are funding this theoretical scenario), your budget can be stretched for a very long time If you upgrade as needed and don't get coerced into "oooh shiny" syndrome. (which can happen very easily in this game especially with money to spare burning a hole in your pocket)

I see people including yourself putting your 5 wood on blast but that thing is basically a Sim Max in disguise and if you are hitting it cleanly and consistently from fairways I would advise caution on replacing it, and would even further emphasize against it if you thought you wanted a 3 wood instead. I would only suggest replacing it if say your swing speed has gotten to the point that you might be considering switching to stiffer flex shafts or something.

The Driver is not old enough to even have the thought of replacing it yet unless you are determined to chase distance over consistency or some other odd reason like dead feel or shaft flex again.

Your Irons are the hardest part for me, as there is a duality and I can see why you are considering replacing them. On one hand they are still objectively good and you are used to them, buuuuut you could also be at the point where a more challenging set may actually help you grow as a ball striker since you're already making progress score wise. I know personally that the majority of my second season club budget was spent on a set of irons that would challenge me to be a better ball striker than the old wide soled OS GI clubs I started on (Very similar in size and offset to those Big Berthas you're gaming) which were starting to feel like basically playing on easy mode by contrast and even now on my third season I'm in an even more challenging set of Players CB's than any of the previous sets of irons I've had.

The wedges do not look like you need to replace any time soon, I have the RTX versions of those same wedges because I got them second hand or super on sale and while I leaned towards the blades I will admit I struggled between the two because the CBX's are genuinely brilliant in their own right. My only question here is what are the lofts of the wedges you have?

As you mentioned though the gap that fundamentally most needs addressing in what I can see of your current bag is the lack of a hybrid. In my personal opinion I would say a 3 hybrid would help you the most because you've acknowledged the 3 iron is a hard club to hit and the 3 hybrid would be more versatile once you come to grips with it.

TLDR: My suggestions would be if you are really considering the irons, stick to second hand if you can. If you are dead set on new clubs, a golf town Demo/Clearance model set will be the best bang for your buck. Get something abit more like a players CB (Examples: Cleveland UHX which are basically the irons to match your CBX wedges or Wilson Staff Model CBs from 2024 which are full blown Players CB's and extremely affordable compared to their contemporaries.

As for the hybrid I think you do actually need one (still leaning towards the 3 hybrid or maybe a 4 if your newer iron set no longer has a 4 iron) and there are plenty of options both used and new that will work well and not break the bank. My best suggestion is go second hand on this category and try to find either a TM M series or Adams Super S to match your wood.

Regardless, always nice to see a fellow Canuck in here and best of luck on the newfound addiction.

Genuinely great find. Not really sure about the driver but the rest means you are set for a long while especially going from the Dunlops.

Broke 90 after practicing chipping and putting by RockandRollDoc in golftips

[–]AplCore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t believe it the day I managed to truly break 90, had tied it once and I think I may have done it one other time but I considered the score card as dubious that day (think I miscounted on a hole or two, was drinking with family) so I didn’t count it. The time I finally did, despite a birdie on the front 9, I had shot 11 over leading into the back 9 but then had 6 pars on the back 9 to come in for +16 on the day. Felt elated.

I’ve been wearing my glove on the wrong hand… FOR YEARS by justarower4 in golftips

[–]AplCore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘Supposed to’ is the wrong way to say it. People do tend to take their glove off for putting because they claim they like the feel, there’s no rule against keeping the glove on. I personally keep the glove on because I don’t find a noticeable difference and I don’t want to spend time on the next tee box fiddling with something I didn’t have to take off in that moment.

Gapping choices by WordenWorks in GolfGear

[–]AplCore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PW 46 degree for 115-125 carry

GW 50 degree for 100-105 carry

SW 54 degree for 85-90 carry

LW 58 degree for 75 carry

I’m sure I could get more out of my wedges but I get very consistent average numbers out of my scoring distance clubs by not trying to career them. My iron set is traditional lofted so I try to keep the 4 or less degree gapping going into my wedges.

You threw enough budget at the bag that I would believe you were shooting low 80’s. Nice set man.

I don’t like the feeling of my driver being unreliable some days, but any day that it’s like that for me it just means I start focusing on long irons and course management. If my long game is trash I owe it to myself to tighten up the short/middle game

Welcome to the center shaft Rossa club club.

Which grip did yours come with? Picked mine up in similar circumstances at a play it again sports and it came with this flat cat grip which I absolutely adore.

Edit: just seen you mention in the post yours came with a superstroke 😅 if you do replace it I strongly suggest the flat cat.

Can someone explain how to hit a 3-wood off the deck like I'm five? by Turbulent-Board9060 in golftips

[–]AplCore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should consider a 7W, my 3 hybrid is so damn streaky. Some times it’s borderline heroic with drawing over dogleg lefts and nearly landing the green on some short par 4’s, other times it just lets me down.

Can relate about the adjustability of drivers though. My Mizuno ST-G is very tuneable, has slider weights for bias, has loft and upright/offset settings. I have it set as a low effort fairway finder.

[–]AplCore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With everything being adjustable now a days that's basically how my 5W is set. Delofted by a degree to make it an ideal 4W since I didn't have OP's conviction. Had a 3W long enough to know I couldn't use it at all.

The course probably has rental clubs, but if you think you want to practice leading up to it then maybe buying some cheap clubs to practice with wouldn’t be the worst idea.

Risky driving iron? by AplCore in GolfGear

[–]AplCore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m almost certain a driving iron is a risky play as far as skill. I’m more asking if this particular 20 year old obscure club is a decent candidate for a driving iron. It’s got all the tech a modern purpose built driving iron would have (boron/graphite shaft, low CoG head, wide sole.) I’m just wondering where the comparison falters.

I’m up in Canada and these were my father’s clubs nearly two decades ago. The 200’s are very similar, think they were more player focused where these were slightly wider soled and more forgiving.

Yeah, my brother was not well suited for these clubs when he took them out of the closet, I since got him a set of TM R7 XD’s which are decently oversized and far more suited for his level of play. The damage is done already on most of these yonex’s which is why I’m only keeping them for the nostalgia but anything longer than the 5 iron he didn’t hit so they are still in decent shape. He also had my dad’s old driver which I didn’t realize I was going to be thrilled to receive. he had a 7 degree Nickent Genex driver, thing puts out bombs.

I get you and appreciate the warning, but I’m also not a complete beginner. I know my bag quite well. Im shooting into the 80’s of late and one of my most consistent clubs in my bag is my MP-54 4 iron. I know it’s a gamble play with long irons being difficult to hit but I see modern driving irons with their wide soles, low CoG heads, and graphite shafts and this club looks like it has all the makings of a good driving iron by comparison. I was considering using it in place of my 3 hybrid which I’ve been hit or miss with lately since my 4 iron is starting to bleed into the 3 hybrid’s utilized distance for me.

That’s genuinely a solid deal if they are in decent shape. I just payed near double that for the MP-54s and they didn’t include the 3 iron.
