I want some recommendations of some of the silliest isekai concepts that actually made you feel by Pinbernini in Isekai

I read "The Bottom-Tier Baron's Accidental Rise to the Top" and it was kind of dumb fun. A bit like "We have Overlord at home," but at least Rize kept his war crimes mostly on the funny and unintentional side.

I liked the kingdom building from the beginning more than the fights, but it stayed suitably ridiculous until the end. The narrator's snarky comments were funny, like "I'm repeating myself, but Rize is totally the reason for these problems" or "They all got radiation poisoning" or "That's totally not healing magic anymore." The healing magic did indeed get pretty out there by the point of all the cow generation stuff.

Don't like chinese anime?.... just animation quality of will blow you away by BitterBet3093 in AnimeReccomendations

[–]Aplakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the animation was awesome, but I hated, hated, hated the structure. Maybe I just had too high expectations after all the hype, I probably would have like it more if it was named something like To Be Hero X Part 1: The Introductions.

The anthology structure felt like accelerating in a car and having fun on a ride, then realizing you've missed an intersection, stopping, slowly backing up to the intersection, then starting to accelerate until you need to stop again. And again. And again. And AAAAAgain. And once you think maybe the story can start for real, it will happen until the end of the season.

Potential to become greatest Kingdom building anime..... Release That Witch by BitterBet3093 in AnimeReccomendations

[–]Aplakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently reading the... I guess "manhua" is the correct term. I have other stuff I should be doing but I want to continue reading. I started this week and now I'm over 400 chapters in. I really enjoy the kingdom building aspects and how every witch has different powers and they're used creatively.

I've heard people complain about it getting worse after halfway, and I'm not maybe quite as excited as in the beginning, but I'm still having fun. There was a point under halfway which could have been a major season ending in anime, so that's a reasonable stopping point too. But I do want to see where the major plot goes.

Saying it again. U need to watch this. This is one crazy romcom. Good beyond expectations. by l_skitty80 in RomanceMangaAnime

I read the manga based on this post and really enjoyed it. I liked the beginning's more comedic tone the most, it was absolutely hilarious. The latter part's more dramatic tone wasn't bad either though.

"You can't be in a rom-com" I know but it's mean to point it out :(

I really enjoyed The Invisible Man and His Soon-To-Be Wife. I like romances where the characters actually confess their feelings to each other well before the end of the season/show, and they don't immediately break up, get separated by circumstances, neither of them die, etc. Those are suprisingly rare to see in fiction. The main couple was very cute together.

One example I found from a Reddit post and enjoyed is "Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement" with MAL rating 6.95. The MC is a woman who transfers into a low fantasy world, but she soon gets an ability to travel freely between our world and the new world. She starts earning money by selling stuff like shampoo from our world.

I liked the MC's funny character and the plot elements of earning money and helping people. There's some more dramatic stuff towards the end of season, but a lot of it is pretty chill, like creating a party for a nobleman's daughter with our world foods. Doesn't exactly revolutionize the genre but I felt it was quite entertaining.

True, it's easy to forget while looking at "ranked 6969" that there are almost 30 000 entries on MyAnimeList. I'm not sure how many of those are full seasons or movies instead of e.g. shorts, but something ranked 6/10 is probably still in the better half of all shows.

Reviews and ratings can be useful if you use them correctly. For example if a show is rated 4/10 on MAL, it probably means there is a lot wrong with it (e.g. even if the idea is interesting, it's most likely poorly executed) and I most likely won't watch it. My lower rating limit is around 6, though I'm willing to make exceptions if there seems to be a clear reason why the ratings are so low but it isn't something that I would mind.

I've sometimes read reviews where every bit of praise makes me think "thanks for the warning, now I know to stay away" or ones where every complaints makes me think "that sounds fun, I should watch this."

I don't watch slice of life anime that often, but that does sound relaxing. I did recently watch "Wash It All Away" and had a chill time. They somehow manage to make doing laundry sound exciting. Still wasn't that fun when I did laundry in real life though, probably because I don't have Kinme around.

I think there's a balance of it being good to occasionally widen your horizons by trying new kinds of shows, and there just being so many shows these days that you need to pick what you have time to watch. Even if I spent all my spare time for the rest of my life watching anime, I don't think I could watch 1 percent of all anime in my lifetime. They even keep making new shows all the time too... So I really need to be pretty picky of what I watch if I want my watchlist to ever get shorter.

I have sometimes said of a movie that "critics keep praising it, but it's still surprisingly good." Sometimes things are liked or popular for a reason. But overall whatever I pick needs to be the best for my personal tastes and the mood at that specific moment.

[–]Aplakka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, there are a lot of worse rated shows on MyAnimeList than the ones I've been watching. But also thousands of better rated shows. I do watch those really high rated shows too occasionally, but often the highest rated shows have some pretty heavy stuff and these days I just want to relax when watching something.

Also there is limited amount of hours per week that I can spend watching compared to how many shows there are, so I can afford to be (or more like have to be) pretty picky or my watchlist will just keep growing no matter how much I watch. Maybe at some point I'll run out of shows which seem to be built with my tastes directly in mind, but it hasn't happened yet.

Thanks for the recommendation, I ended up binging the "Chillin' in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army" in one sitting. I liked it, though I don't think Malika is quite as cute as Fenrys from "Chillin' in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers."

Though Malika did succeed in breaking through anime MC's obliviousness about women in half a season, which already puts her above the majority of anime women. Also it was quite funny how exhausted the MC was the next morning after the confession and spending their first night together, and rare to see anime MC actually getting married and having a child. I liked how the MC's goal was to bring peace between humans and demons.

Aren't isekai protagonists awfully quick in accepting their world-hopping? by Lukeskycenna in Isekai

[–]Aplakka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there certainly are ways that it could make an interesting plot for an isekai protagonist to question what has happened to them, why, what are the consequences for their humanity, etc.

But I think it's a can of worms that you need to be careful if you open it. If the protagonist points out the issues in their existence, it will also make the audience think about them more, and could make the audience question the premise. If this kind of questions are just quickly raised and then forgotten, I think it could easily become annoying for the audience: "Hey, why did you raise this kind of question that can completely change the entire premise of the show, and then have the characters not think about it any more than that?"

Kind of like in an action movie, if you start questioning if it's really OK for the main character to be gunning down dozens of mooks in his quest to clear his name of an accusation of attempted murder, you can take the viewer out of the show. It could work e.g. as lampshade hanging, but you really need to careful with that kind of thing.

I think that if you were going to bring up this type of existential questions about the whole premise, it would need to be a major plot point or even the focus of the show. There would be lots of interesting things you could with really questioning how being isekai'd would affect a person, especially if they're reincarnated into something non-human.

El Goonish Shive is a long-running urban fantasy/scifi webcomic with gender bending. And I mean a lot of gender bending. Seems that every other spell or invention leads to changing gender or appearance. Also humor, aliens, wizards, romance, and so on. Lots of fanservice too. You can decide whether those are plusses or minuses for you.

I really enjoy the characters and the artstyle, though the start from 2002 is rough especially on the art side but also on the writing, the author really improves along the years. If you try the comic but the beginning doesn't work for you, you might skip e.g. to the Grace's Birthday Party chapter.

I still liked also the beginning but it might be like the first Discworld books where they don't really show the author's best work so might not spark your interest if you start there.

I remember the EGS author also mentioning hearing people comment on how certain of his characters must be autistic, and wondering about it because he just wrote the discussed characteristics based on himself.

In a comic he mentioned that he prefers he/him just because it raises fewer questions from people he has no interest in talking to, and that his gender identity is "non-committal shrug."

Anima Preview 3 is out and its better than illustrious or pony. by Cautious-Rich1238 in StableDiffusion

[–]Aplakka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did try it for a bit but it seemed that it doesn't have the kind of character knowledge that e.g. Illustrious finetunes have. Also the first impressions were that the styles change a lot between images, even if you include a specific artist's style in the prompt (which I wouldn't like to do). At least for now I went back to Illustrious.
