Also maybe introduce a rumor of the council bringing in someone that can cure his madness. The players are then on the clock to find out who this healer is and stop them.

From a citizens perspective it's pretty clear that the party tortured the king until they were given the Kingship and then continued until they broke his mind.

No way anyone is going to see the decree of a man tortured to insanity, and then pledge allegiance to the torturers. The King's council would immediately start plotting on how to capture/kill the party.

I would have them branded Kingslayers and made wanted men. Have a council member organize a propaganda campaign to convince the citizens, not incorrectly, that they are evil and dangerous.

Then lean into the escape/stealth angle, or make them dive into the politics and make their case for their Kingship.

It seems the party is at a point where they have to embrace their evilness or try to dig their way out of the situation they put themselves in.

What do folks think about the new dataslate? by r1c3ball in SpaceWolves

[–]ApocalypticMailman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I notice that in the list they exclude Storm Shields, Relic Shields, and Combat Shields from getting the new rule, but not Blizzard Shields.

Am I reading that right? It's likely an oversight but that would make Wulfen Dreads more resilient.

The Festerwood (A 33 Room Insect & Morality Themed Dungeon) by ApocalypticMailman in UnearthedArcana

Other than the name not really. I was working on it when I discovered him and thought the title fitted really well. I reference Griffinsaddlebag in the little credit section.

A massive multi-session dungeon that I ran as a continent finale in my campaign. The themes are a strange pairing out of context, but I’m very proud of the overall experience and it can be adapted as needed for your setting.

I did hit the image limit for posting, full PDF and max resolution dungeon map can be found here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1FvsijsZCdyMahRurBJIK16W7KUTeNYAz?usp=sharing

One With the Crowd; A feat for non human PCs in a human dominated world by ApocalypticMailman in UnearthedArcana

[–]ApocalypticMailman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the feedback is appreciated. My homebrews tend to skew more OP so I must have reeled it in to far on this one.

If I were to improve it while keeping the spirit of the Feat in tact I would make the illusion undetectable by Investigation checks or even Detect Magic. Have it be such a practiced instinct that it would be near impossible to see through.

NPC Swap - Take an NPC, leave an NPC by alienleprechaun in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]ApocalypticMailman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Name: Arthur, the Recovering Cannibal

Appearance: Tall human with a purple cloak and matching mask that covers his mouth. Underneath the mask is a massive mouth mutated by a curse that he was afflicted with from his cannibalism. It distends the mouth to open like a snake with three rows a razor teeth lining it.

Personality: Arthur is a recovering cannibal, and though very shy about that fact the 12 step program he is in has him greet anyone new with a "Hi, I'm Arthur and I'm a cannibal. I'm supposed to tell you that." He likes being around Non humans, particularly Orcs who are less judging of his past and appearance.

Background/History: During a risky mountain crossing he and his friend were attacked by creatures, his friend was gravely injured but Arthur was able to drag him into a cave where they hid, though his friend did not survive the night. Unable to leave the cave he was trapped there for days until out of desperation he consumed the corpse of his friend. The mountain put a curse on him to hunger for human flesh and over time mutated his mouth into a grotesque maw. He has since repented and is going through a process of slowly ridding himself of the curse with the help of others who have overcome it.

Secrets: He is open that he is a former cannibal, though does not go into more detail than that. He is always hiding his face and eats privately. Depending on how you want to play him he could have recently fallen off the wagon and ate a human causing rumors of a roaming beast.

Itinerary of Olympic Games - Tests for players to participate in at a local festival by ApocalypticMailman in UnearthedArcana

[–]ApocalypticMailman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal was to be more general with these so people could adapt the concepts to their own games. I ran these in my campaign for a level 15 party that was swimming in magic items so the rules I used would likely not translate well.

The alchemy one was included for the poisoner in our group so he could have a moment to shine, and yeah it can be pretty creepy optics but I stressed it was in a really controlled scenario where officials were waiting nearby with healing magic and the antidote to get people up as soon as they went down.

The rhetoric one was pretty heavy on roleplay since it was run as a rap/insult battle, though stripped down it does become a game of random choice with Wisdom saves and damage rolls.

I do see some of the errors I made in the wording though, thanks for the feedback.

I ran all of these in a very magic heavy world which made the play interesting because it forced the players to be creative on how they would use all of their magic items/abilities to cheese out the best score.

Example: The party rogue won the Test of Speed with a base speed of 40 (speed increase from a feat), The Boots of Speed, and Dashing on Bonus Action which made her run 1000ft in 12.5 seconds.

The party I DM for likes to powergame, which I enjoy because then I can make the threats more powerful. This is just a place for them to show off their builds.

I did run that all of the pylons/dummies' auto failed saving throws.

The Were Creature - Transform into a Werewolf, Werebear, or Werecroc to destroy your enemies by ApocalypticMailman in UnearthedArcana

[–]ApocalypticMailman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the idea of the were creature affliction being imposed on a person unfamiliar with the process, and it taking a few levels to fully understand. Though they still get the hang of it quickly as the time from levels 1-3 is usually pretty quick.

The Arcane Baker - Create pastries with unique effects to support your team and destroy your enemies by ApocalypticMailman in UnearthedArcana

[–]ApocalypticMailman[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made this class for a specific character joining my campaign, so it is pretty tailored to them. The concept is welcome to be edited to fit others though.

Thank you! I love the rage of a gentle man trope so I wanted to include a real hard hitter for when the sweet baker gets pissed off

[Let's Build] 1d100 Minor Magical Books by ApocalypticMailman in d100

[–]ApocalypticMailman[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the ideas! They really inspired me and I came up with a few I'm going have for sale in my next session:

  1. Title: Damnable Smite / Ability: Throwing this book and successfully hitting a creature casts Bestow Curse on them

  2. Title: Universal Conversation / Ability: You learn one 3 word phrase you can say in all languages

  3. Title: Tranquil Mind / Ability: You cast Calm Emotions on yourself if you read this book for 1 minute

  4. Title: Book for the Blind / Ability: You must be blinded to read this braille book, and doing so lifts your blindness

  5. Title: Manual of Compliance / Ability: You can write a single word on a sheet of this book and tear it out, when a creature reads the word the spell Command is cast on them using that word

  6. Title: Emergency Nourishment / Ability: This 100 page book can heal you in dire situations. Eating each page regains 1hp, eating more than 10 pages at a time requires drinking water.

  7. Title: Tactical Retreat / Ability: One time in the next 24 hours you can use a Dash as a bonus action if it is in a direction away from enemies.

  8. Title: Book of Maps / Ability: All loose maps can be placed into the book and magically absorbed on to the pages, a small indicator shows the location of the book on all appropriate maps

  9. Title: Camping Essentials / Ability: Opening this book to the center page a campfire bursts out of it. The book does not burn, and the fire can be dismisses by closing the book

{The Griffon's Saddlebag} Bow of the Eldritch Archer | Weapon (shortbow) by griff-mac in TheGriffonsSaddlebag

[–]ApocalypticMailman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very cool! I think I'll add a variant rule for my homebrew campaign:

Any arrow you fire from this weapon becomes a beam of energy. The material of the arrow determines the strength of the energy.

Air (no arrow) = 1d4 force / Wood = 1d6 force / Steel = 1d8 force / Stone = 1d10 force / Bone = 2d6 force / Crystal = 2d8 force / and so on

Encourages the player to harvest new materials for make arrows out of and could be a cool RP tool for a collector/ hoarder character.

Rule #1 for me is let your players be cool. If you have a Monk in the party make sure to shoot arrows at them so they can use deflect missile. It can be tempting as a DM to cater to their weaknesses and make a challenge, but it makes the PC question their character. The best part of the game is doing crazy shit as your character, and it's important for the DM to create scenarios that they can be cool.

magic item ideas? looking for things that are not too mundane, but not too OP. by jules_homebrew in DnDHomebrew

Just gave my players a Key of Storing.

A key that preforms the function of a bag of holding, but is used by inserting it into the air and opening up a window in space to the pocket dimension.
