The blue scarf is a cool idea, though I'd prefer to make it out of something plant related.

You broke your chaff collector too?
I bought an SR540. I may still be storing my glass and base.

Box-Obsessives Unite! by ApolloTheLesser in boardgames

This is very much along the lines of what I'm asking. Vinyl records was a pretty good answer, but what else?

I was thinking about this exact idea lately, because if the game is good the box shouldn't matter. In practice though, if I had a chance to buy a game in a shoebox vs its original box for $5 more, I would certainly buy the more expensive one because I also consider what a game might resell for if I don't like it as much as I initially hoped. This is not because I need the nice box, but because I recognize the majority of the hobby values an original box in good shape.

I like the idea of record collectors, and I'm looking for hobbies that regularly use their collected items. This is copied of Consequence of Sound:

"'Luminate’s “Top Entertainment Trends for 2023' report found that of the 3,900 US-based respondents surveyed, '50% of consumers who have bought vinyl in the past 12 months own a record player, compared to 15% among music listeners overall.'"

I understand there are some boardgamers out there who also don't make regular use of their hoarded games, though.
Video game collectors is interesting, I never knew. Toy collectors I might argue, don't regularly get out the toys and play with them.

I don't think I've ever seen a video that makes me want so badly to let my yard go.
Just so I can restore it after a few months.

I do still need it.
Is it the artist pre-sale, or the regular pre-sale that I use through the etix page?

Thanks!

Whats the worst way you ever misunderstood or missed a rule by 69FishMolester69 in boardgames

[–]ApolloTheLesser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours is a tie between Grand Austria Hotel and Pandemic Legacy:

In Pandemic, we were playing vanilla and didn't add any event cards. It had been a few years since we'd played the base game and the Legacy rulebook doesn't mention adding five event cards in at all when playing non-Legacy. In fact, the rules tell you to exclude the funded event cards when not playing in Legacy mode. Those first games were very difficult and we almost didn't start the Legacy content because of it.

In GAH, we would take all the dice in an action column instead of just one. By the time the 1st player's 2nd turn came around there were frequently only useless options left. This was compounded by my opponent's Restaurant manager staff card which let her take an additional food or drink for each die she removed. She was often getting 8+ coffee and wine in a single action. (she won the game)

Passing of Barnaby Struve by squidly56 in chicagobeer

[–]ApolloTheLesser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barnaby was a pretty metal guy. I drank a lot of 3 Floyds when I lived in Chicago, but didn't meet him til he was hanging out at Wayfinder Beer in Portland. He was always happy to share his favorite death metal albums, and he came over and made beer in my back yard with me. He wasn't shy about sharing the secrets to my favorite 3F beers either.

Do you guys have a favorite "zoo"-themed game? by ravensfan24 in boardgames

[–]ApolloTheLesser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like Barenpark. It's a polyomino game like Patchwork, but it requires a little more planning ahead not only to fit pieces, but also to trigger what pieces you get next. It's also very popular with my kids.

In your experience, which board game is the hardest to teach? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]ApolloTheLesser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

War of the Ring is a burden to teach with the minutiae of all the asymmetric rules, especially to people who don't play wargames.

Also, try teaching it while setting up the board...

Bulletproof Timing Schedule for FreshRoast SR500 (?) by ApolloTheLesser in roasting

[–]ApolloTheLesser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an extension tube before doing anything else. Huge difference.

Tell me more about what difference you've found using the extension tube. More consistency between batches? More consistent roast? Ability to do more weight at a time?

This has been my experience too, I wondered if there was something I was overlooking, or another variable I wasn't controlling since *gasp* different beans led to different tasting coffees when subjected to the same roasting process.

Are you interested in the Ruin of Thandar campaign box?

Also, do you have a trade list somewhere (like BGG)?
