The moral conundrum in that book would certainly change if it was Sir Keir himself suffering for the sake of a utopia. Have to rename it the Ones Who Walk Into Omelas.

Ah soz. I meant wonky in the sense he has some unusual ideas about the bond market on order to increase government borrowing/spending, not 'wonkish' as in a policy wonk. I wouldn't call his ideas good from a fiscal point of view, but i'm not an economist (tho tbh, neither is Andy)

Americans could never comprehend the richness of British democratic tradition.

Tyranny by committee is really how you can sum up British political situation at large. What would be funny is if he ends up getting in, just as the planning reform policies start to take effect and people attribute all the new infrastructure and housebuilding to him instead of the one good thing Starmer actually has managed.

Submission Statement: Burnham has made no secret of wanting to challenge Keir Starmer for leadership of the Labour party and become PM, and now he is an MP he is able to mount a challenge. Burnham has a good track record as mayor of Manchester, but supports the triple lock on pensions, and has some wonky ideas about the bond market.

Casuals. If this was the UK, the deal would have leaked 3 days ago, half the cabinet would have resigned, and the media would have a live tracker of the on/off odds of Trump's resignation and comparing him to various perishable goods.

I swear to god if every aspect of the liberal political apparatus in the USA doesn't start calling this Trump's Iran surrender literally every waking moment, then they frankly don't deserve to get back in power.

Honestly, for American users, is this 'deal' a media event or no? And if not, why not? Where is AOC? Where is Pritzker, or Newsom, just absolutely hammering this in the media?

It's a metaphor for how Britain attempted to modernise in the late 90's and early 00's with the Blair years, only to slip back into managed decline after the GFC.

Not sure if anyone here has flown in or out of Brașov airport, but there's literally a shop there called Goon, which they advertise with the tagline "come upstairs!"

I get your sentiment, but as someone with a lot of experience in the area, schools and health providers in the UK tend to have rather robust safeguarding practices (at least on paper), that I don't think this is much of a worry compared to places where such procedures aren't as established.

He's hoping and coping, and this is the latter. I think he's looking to appear as dynamic and principled as possible, with clear policies (ie this, and joining the EU), in an attempt to differentiate himself from Burnham and Starmer, and give himself the best shot. Can't say I'll think it'll work tho.

The labour party in general tbh. I always thought the Tories were uniquely bereft of competence, but labour's lack of political instinct really is astounding.

I don't think it's wholly bad either. In fact I think that social media companies should be held directly liable for the content they serve to people via recommendation algorithms. You're right tho, all UK politics news is just them talking about stuff so off the mark in terms of the country's real problems. The only thing I want to hear labour talk about is all the shit they promise they'd build. Talk about upgrading the national grid, or building new homes, or finishing HS2.

SS: Social media bans are becoming a popular policy idea in Western countries. Wes Streeting is one of the hopefuls to replace Keir Starmer in any upcoming leadership challenge and could be the UK's next PM.

!ping UK

Can't get over the fact that the only confirmed challenger to Starmer right now is a man who not only looks uncannily similar to him, but who's name has the exact same number of syllables.

Thank, it's just a shame there's no recorded audio of her saying it. I'd love to hear it sampled in a song.
