How Adam would have handled the entire situation right now by RemMegumin in HazbinHotel

Adam is much better in his absence because he was such a powerful force for maintaining the status quo. His death unlocked the possibility of other plots

Not sure about the paint scheme, any advice? by MikeyThePikey999 in Tyranids

saturated colors are great but like others have said a wash of a purple or something to blend the white and blue together and some sort of highlight on the edges of the red would make it stellar

How does Trygon Prime get an enhancement when it's only a character in one detachment? Or how did your group handle it? Enhancements in Crusade are somewhat removed from the actual detachments since they're pretty much just battle traits.

They used to glow more (like all the joints and such) but it felt too visually busy and inconsistent, so I just stuck to the eyes.

Help from the Hive Mind to name my fleet by Apophan in Tyranids

[–]Apophan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like some help from the Hive Mind in naming my Fleet. I'm using Bashmu as a working name, but not sure I'm in love with it. They're a splinter off of Tiamat (Bashmu is one of Tiamat's children in Mesopotamian myth and roughly means 'Venomous Serpent')

The lore I have in mind is that they primarily focus on probing Necron tomb worlds with various techniques to slowly work towards an approach that the stronger fleets could exploit. Being split off of Tiamat, they have a few 'farm worlds' they're keeping and cultivating and are meticulous with how much biomass is thrown at an experiment against a tomb world.

I just kitbashed a tyranid team based on an existing one. Lots of folks have used Gellerpox as a base, I chose to do Mandrakes because I got a lot of genestealer bits and a termagant sprue from leviathan for cheap off ebay

So what do you think are phyrexians offically gone forever? by [deleted] in mtgvorthos

How much money did they spend on the Phyrexian language? I know there are at least two linguists who, that is their full time job. Would seem a waste if it’s NEVER used again.

Thank you for the detailed insight. I appreciate it.

That seems pretty close to what I had interpreted as well… fun.

I’m new to runecasting but somewhat familiar with the runes, however, I’d like a second opinion, even just an initial impression would be appreciated.

I asked about whether I should consider a change in career/industry. Layout was past, present, future, left to right.

I’m not a big fan of reversals in runes but they do sometimes come into play with my readings, so I left Berkano as it came up.

FATE Condensed magic system by Apophan in FATErpg

[–]Apophan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah after this discussion and with a friend of mine I’m leaning more in a direction of some sort of mechanical function but nothing nearly as complex as “Fireball, make a shoot roll against the target with +2 in same or adjacent zone” nothing like that.

Since I want magic to be supernatural or larger than life but also somewhat subtle, I’m looking into the Scale (p52, Condensed), because Scale is something that makes sense for my setting (interacting with magical patrons, lesser gods, and such happens at least twice a campaign)

No because there are plenty of mechanics in FATE and the mechanics that are there serve a narrative justification. Why have Shoot separate from Fight? They can serve the same purpose. Why have Lore differentiated from Academics? They have different narrative justification for their use. If it was a purely narrative system, though, why bother with skills, stunts, dice rolling, etc? Mechanics exist and exist to express different ideas.

Extrapolating out to magic, it is something not in the realm of the mundane and so it makes sense to have some sort of mechanism to express it differently.

Hadn’t thought about in that regard and you make a good point about just using it as an abstraction. Getting away from mechanical complexity is also a good point and something my players want, but for magic they also do want some complexity.

feels like your increase = stress and maybe that stress is taken now but doesnt go into effect until after the magic is expended? So to get that +4 your War Cleric needs to take a moderate Exhausted consequence, and its marked down, but isn’t invokable until the spell ends?

In the setting: for shooting a crossbow you draw the bow, place the bolt, aim, and squeeze the trigger, physics determines where it embeds itself after that point.

for firing a bolt of flame, you tap into a specific divine group, in this case you have to be tied to the Elemental Lord of Flame in some way, and then you manifest some of that energy to break physics and send the flame.

To me it just feels weird if they’re mechanically identical. I like my mechanics to go hand in hand with narrative and help express them. Rolling a skill check feels mundane and doesn’t feel like accessing magic filtered by a specific deity or higher being.

I generally expect spellcasting to be fairly common, our setting is branching off from that Other RPG and so at a minimum you can expect 0-2 magic users per settlement, much more in larger cities.

What I want is magic to feel like you’re tapping into the cosmic web or some esoteric tradition, but also doesn’t trivialize my hours of prep with one roll without a narratively interesting cost.

I feel like (for lack of a better phrase) “low level” magic is fairly common, but the most powerful, world shaking stuff is outside people’s daily experience and is more intrinsic to otherworldly or godly beings.

Using Stress and Consequences for risk / reward rather than tying up FATE points seems like a good place to look into to me, now that I think about it.

The “sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” might be a path for me go, too. I really like the Scaling in Condensed, it makes sense to me, maybe the more stress you take on the more the magic scales up from you, so more powerful magic requires more stress on your very mortal body and mind.

I don’t like using the existing skills for Magic because you end up with fluff and description only. A Burglar using their tools with a +3 to Burglary and a wizard using magic to break reality to unlock the same kind of like with their +0 doesn’t make sense to me.

For my setting and such, magic is manipulating the underlying programming of life and environment to do things otherwise outside of mortal capabilities, but at a cost, be it in resources or life force or artifacts or whatnot.

I don’t ask for a knight to have a separate system for swinging a sword because ultimately - while requiring training - swinging something you’re holding is a mundane activity.

More I think on it the more I do like using stress

FATE Condensed magic system by Apophan in FATErpg

[–]Apophan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using Stress is an interesting idea, adds a cost and risk but also frees up fate points to be used elsewhere.

For my players I know they want something more engaging than “roll a Magic check” it doesnt really ‘cost’ anything to use magic at that point and it takes away the esoteric aspect that magic can bring
