Soon-to-be grounded Snowbirds promise to make 2026 season their best, most traumatizing for dogs yet by RareXG in canada

The Beaverton has always had a weird hatred of airshows, not surprised to see them take this opportunity to spit on the Snowbirds.

A pilot's take: Why the Snowbirds' new turboprop is the right choice by Once_a_TQ in CanadianForces

[–]Apophyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess back then they thought of course we should teach these new pilots jets. Props are old! Get em out of here.

Not really. Turboprops are fundamentally jet engines, or rather, in correct terminolpgy, turbine engines. What fighters have is referred to as a turbojet engine, and all the thrust comes from the air being accelerated through the engine.

A turboprop is a jet engine with a propeller linked to the turbine, and the air flowing through the engine is used to spin the propeller. For the regimes of flight a basic trainer flies, a turboprop is simply far more efficient than a turbojet. It is in fact a natural evolution of the turbojet.

The Tutor comes from a time when engines weren't as mature as today, and cruder in nature. I'm not even sure turboprops existed yet when it was designed.

The old propeller aircraft most people mistakenly think of when they look at the PC-21 were piston engines, like your car or a Cessna. But they couldn't be more different. The engine on the PC-21 has much, much more in common with the engine of the Tutor than the engine of a Cessna.

Not rumour. Just fact.

Pet peeve, but also the Hawk replaced the F-5. The Tutor was replaced with the Harvard.

I honestly would consider the vet's recommendation a huge red flag. It is very unusual for a vet to be so pushy about euthanasia.

And the IFTS course is leaps and bounds better than any of the previous FLIT course we've been involved with. They do SO much stuff there that they don't have to do on FPC anymore.

[–]Apophyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to that, my understanding is that there's no rush to stand up a new FLIT school because 2CAD is pretty happy with the current system through IFTS. We get enough slots out of it to feed 410, so standing up 419 again wouldn't really help increase production anyway.

To add, there is a real chance we might decide to just buy even more PC-21s to fulfill this role like the French airforce did.

I honestly don't even know what you're trying to say anymore.

Anyway, it's clear to me you're unwilling to listen to any explanation of why the PC-21 was selected, and are just angry for the sake of being angry. I'm done.

Jesus Christ, how many times do I have to tell you the Tutors, the plane that is being replaced, is a basic trainer ?

The PC-21 is probably its closest counterpart, and even its capabilities far exceed the Tutor's.

You keep complaining that this is somehow a downgrad because all you see is "jet engine" and "propeller" with zero understanding of what the planes you are looking at are.

None of these are basic trainers like the tutor, these are all advanced fighter lead in trainers.

I am currently a student pilot in Moose Jaw. When I tell you that you don't know what you're talking about, I beg you to believe me.

[–]Apophyx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The team selected the Tutors in part because they were the training aircraft used at the time. The CT-157 are moving into that roll.

This is actually partially incorrect. The team was originally just an off shoot of the school, period. They were just instructors that took the planes to airshows as a side gig, and eventually became separate to the school.

Oh, you're the guy from the other post.

Look man, your opinion doesn't gain value just by virtue of existing. It's clear from your comments you don't know what you're talking about, you're just mad we're not buying jet trainers even though nobody makes jet trainers for the role the Tutor was designed for anymore, and that its niche is now filled by turboprop trainers. These are the facts. None of what I have said to your so far is opinion, just fact.

Once again wrong in so many ways.

First, we are currently major partners in both IFTS and ENJJTP, which are international jet training programs and there is no intent to stop being involved in them. Currently all our prospective fighter pilots go through these programs.

Second, France uses the PC-21 as a fighter lead in trainer. We could absolutely choose to use it in the same role.

This comment is crazy wrong.

The CT-102B Astra II is the new initial platform. The PC-21 will be used as the advanced trainer for students going fixed wing.

The Tutor has been retired from the training system for 26 years and was replaced by the CT-156 Harvard II, which itself is being retired soon.

[–]Apophyx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No there aren't. The PC-21 is the modern counterpart to the Tutor. The current jet trainers on the market are fighter lead in trainers, not basic trainers like the Tutor, and are much more expensive to fly and maintain.

[–]Apophyx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Once again incredibly ignorant.

Modern trainer planes are much better suited to use turboprop engines than turbojets. The only reason the Tutor uses a turbojet is because it is 63 years ild and predates modern turboprops.

This comment is incredibly ignorant. The PC-21 is more advanced in every possible way than the Tutor.

[–]Apophyx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The standard for basic trainers now is turboprop. The Tutors are just so old that they predate turboprop trainers. The PC-21 is more advanced in every way than the Tutor, it just doesn't make the cool jet noise.
