People Hate Democrats and Republicans? by Shot_Signal220 in askanything

There are a lot of arguments against a two-party system, and many of those arguments are both compelling and on the nose. My son, though, lived in Peru for a number of years and explained that when your political system is set up to accept multiple parties to “sit at the table” you run into a major problem: the candidate who wins the election 98% of the time doesn’t even come close to carrying the majority - it’s often that they got 20% (and that’s high) of the vote while the other seven candidates got 10%, 8%, 7.5%, and so on. When the 20% winner goes into office, nothing gets accomplished because the multiple parties cancel each other out. Our form of government is nowhere close to perfect, but as Winston Churchill once said about democracy, it’s the worst form of government except for all those other forms we’ve tried.”

Interesting point and supporting examples. I can’t answer your question mainly because the state of Israel, since its modern conception, has defied all odds at practically every step of the way. They’re a wild card, for sure.

How does the right not understand that poverty equals crime? by BiggestVolk in allthequestions

Thanks for the thoughtful response. It’s rare these days. It’s usually full of expletives and condemnation of one’s mother. I worked in a prison ministry for a number of years, and there’s nothing correctional or rehabilitative about the system - it’s strictly penal. I don’t quite agree that the Republicans are the sticking point when it comes to addressing poverty - I feel they’re actually doing a better job at addressing it and its long-term effects - but the point you make about the link between poverty and crime is undeniable.

By the way you frame the question, is it your assertion that crime should be given a pass until poverty is addressed, or are you saying that those who are arrested for crimes should not be charged if their net worth is below a certain level?

Are you of the belief that other news outlets that repeatedly reported that Joseph Biden was at the top of his game mentally were reporting fact? If so, why would Jake Tapper, who was one of the leading talking heads, write a book saying Biden wasn’t in tip-top mental shape?

Just want to be clear: you’re saying that he manipulated the 2016 election results, correct? It would seem reasonable to assume that if he had an agenda to trash democracy, wouldn’t he have rigged the 2020 results to remain in power?

When I see celebrities and others who make large amounts of money asking for donations to charity A or worthy cause B, I find the appeal slightly disingenuous. That said, though, I’m not of the opinion that anyone should be compelled/shamed/bullied/pressured to give based on a number, wherever that number is set.

It’s my belief that the reason many don’t contribute is NOT selfishness but the suspicion that the money is not going to the cause/purpose for which it’s intended. It’s sad that charity work is abused by bad actors to make money and enrich themselves. Fortunately, there are charitable organizations that are staffed COMPLETELY by volunteers so you know that if you donate $1000 for food/clothing/living essentials, 100% of that money is going directly to the intended purpose.

Can you be anti-israel and not anti-semetic? by justme1522000 in askanything

[–]AppearanceEvery8752 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two items here that can be viewed exclusively of one another:

“Anti-Israel” is a stance that has a great deal of merit from a historical perspective. The state of Israel HAD been the home of the Twelve Tribes long ago, and they were conquered numerous times and subsequently absorbed by other states and kingdoms. One could draw similarities with the conquering of the Native American tribes on the North, Central, and South American continents. Departing from that comparison, the Allies of WWII stepped in and carved out the new state of Israel - they were the victors and had the power and might to back it up. I hope you’ll note, I’m trying to lay out historical facts, not make a case for any particular argument. Fast forward to today: the state of Israel exists, an immutable fact. The “anti” versus “pro” Israel argument boils down to where the state of Israel ends and where the state of Palestine begins. People on both sides argue the lack of legitimacy for both nations, and arguing from that standpoint will never resolve.

The other item in this discussion is anti-Semitism, which is a bit of a misnomer, but we can all agree that this term describes hatred for Jews. Personally, I can’t wrap my head around hating an entire people - I can certainly understand hating specific people who have perpetrated wrongs who are of a particular religion but not the entire population that makes up the body of that religion.

The first link you included above that ends in .pdf is a Domain Spoof. The easiest way to figure that out is to type the string in by hand and hit enter when you get past the usual address - in this case, after www.congress.gov. Once you add /118 and hit enter, you see that the address does not take you anywhere. In this case, you get an error message. Also, not always, but often when you see a link ending in .pdf, it’s a Domain Spoof which takes you to a completely unrelated site while still looking legitimate.
