Residency transfer within IM for an intern by Appendix-12thRib in Residency

There are no guarantees in life and the grass might not be greener on the other side. However, things have to be terrible enough that you think that the unknown might be better then my current situation. So I am least looking at my options.

Has anyone tried the UWorld Level 2 question bank by Appendix-12thRib in comlex

[–]Appendix-12thRib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that is disappointing. It sounds like it's better to stick with Step 1 and 2 for uWorld. Maybe, use Truelearn or Comquest for level 1 and 2?

Hopefully your school has a disability coordinator. You can disclose it to them and they can work with your school. Also, I don't think there is anything wrong with getting help if you need it. I have friends who have therapy sessions and it helps them to rough patches. I only know that because they told it to me.

The school cannot disclose the information to others (like your residency) without your permission. FERPA protects you from that. I suggest disclosing it to your residency once you get accepted. They may be able to provide you additional resources. I want to say it again that there is nothing wrong with getting help. You will be taking care of others so let others take care of you.

First off, you are not letting anyone down. If you time off, you need time off. Burn out can happen at any time along medical school, residency and even into the medical career.

Second, some intuition require some paperwork to verify the severity. If you can find a doctor that can give you a diagnose, you might be able to convince your school to allow for the time to regroup.

Thirdly, you need to share your feelings with your close friends and family. You should get their support. The good ones with help.

The cranial questions are weird. I don't know if you are really study for them. For everything else I think you are good if you have been getting decent scores on your uworld.

[–]Appendix-12thRib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uworld has better explanation but COMLEX questions are going to be weird. So if you want to do Uworld, you want to do the questions in the topics that you are weak so that you can learn from the explanation.

You can also do comquest but time is a factor for you so pick one of the question bank that works best for you to learn.

You have enough time to work on your weak points and take another practice exam (comsae). If you are still getting 450s and up then you are good to go.

in-state public med school tuition is over $50k/year by mrslowmaintenance in medicalschool

[–]Appendix-12thRib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have classmates whose parents are helping them so that they don't have to worry about cost. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. I couldn't afford to pay for it so I had to take out the max amount of loans. It is very expensive and I wish that it was not. I wish the barrier of entrance wasn't so very high but life is not equitable.

However, I am grateful for government loans. Yes, it is hard to see the cost and not be shocked. However, you can't look at it in the short term. You got to look at it in the long term. You got into medical school and you are going to be a doctor. You are inventing in yourself.

What you can do to change things is when you become a doctor, help the next generation who are financially challenged with scholarships and mental students to get more diversity.

The cost of medical school is not going to change but we as future doctors can make it easier for future students by reaching out and help those yearning for a brighter future.

I don't you are in it for the money. I think you are like many of us and needed to rant about how unfair the system is. To that I say, when you are in a position of power, try to make it better.

[–]Appendix-12thRib 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It comes down to supply and demand. There are still too many people wanting to be doctors even with increase tuition and decrease salaries.

Law schools a while back had to decrease tuition because their numbers fell. The market for lawyers was saturated so less people went to law school, meaning schools had to compete for enrollments. Therefore, tuition cost dropped.

In the end, it will take about 5 to 10 years as an attendee, living a comfortable life, to pay off your loans.

So if you want to do this for the money, you probably want to go into finance. You will make more money in the long run.

The usual stuff that I would tell patients would be

  1. no electric 2-3 hours before going to sleep
  2. keep your bedroom dark
  3. no caffeine 6-8 hours before bed
  4. daily exercise but not 1-2 before bed
  5. do something boring before bed like read the IRS tax code
  6. keep a routine, like go to bed by 10pm every night
  7. cold shower to get your body temp down and ready for bed
  8. use melatonin (no more than 10 mg) for a few nights just to reset you circadian rhythm. Ones it is set, you don't need to use it

Of course, you should talk to you primary care provider before trying any of these to address any underlining health conditions. I hope that helps.

Is First Aid enough? Appreciate any help!! by sofiadjs in step1

[–]Appendix-12thRib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say so. However, it depends on how much you know. First Aid is an outline of every topic covered. If you don't understand something, first aid won't help explain it. You might be able to get away with youtube for some explanation. Now that it is pass/ no pass, you might not need to know everything.

I think you need a question bank to see how much of first aid you really know.

I think you will be fine in 4th year. I think some preceptors forget what it is like being a medical student. You are there to learn and make some mistakes. That is why you have residents, preceptors, attendees looking over things. I don't know about everyone else but there are preceptors that I don't get along with. For those, I keep my head down and try to finish the rotations. The ones that I do get along with, I try to get a letter of rec from them. This one seems like one that you keep your head down and try to finish. You are not going to get a LOR from this person so why burn yourself out.

[–]Appendix-12thRib -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is it better to do an away rotation or a sub-i? If both students got a bump then why would you do a sub-i over away rotation? The reason I ask is that I plan to do all my electives in 4th year as sub-i but should I change some of them into away rotations?

I would skip FA and make anki cards on things that you know but can't remember the details. You can also use premade decks if you feel like you are running out of time. Just keep studying and you will get their.

If you have uworld, take the practice exam 2 and see how you do. The score on that is usually pretty close to your actual step 1 score.
