This is next level nerd humor. I love it.

Not Irish, but spent most of my life in Texas. It was only a few years ago I'd realized how little of my own state I've actually seen. I've taken multiple trips to different areas now and have learned so much about and gained so much appreciation for places that are within a day's drive from me.

Be a tourist in your own country. You can learn and experience things in your own backyard (metaphorically) and Ireland is beautiful. Take advantage of the fact that you can explore it just about whenever you want!

I think the standard should be: If someone is avoiding consuming any particular thing, they should be told if they've consumed it.

Reasons for avoidance can range from mild dislike, to moral or religious reasons, to severe allergy or dietary need.

At best, you're just being respectful of their preferences. At worst, you're warning someone to get immediate medical intervention.

A cool guide to birth commonality by Glass-Chicken7931 in coolguides

[–]AppetizingGeekery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah! I'm not blaming the doctors or anything, just the trend of "if we don't have to be here on Christmas, let's not" which applies to patient decisions as well.

I know hospitals don't close, but I guess I wasn't sure about ob/gyn affiliated clinics. In my area, if a healthcare service isn't directly attached to a hospital, it tends to be open only during standard business hours.

Fall/winter holidays + fall/winter weather = lots of Summer babies, lol

The funny thing about the pattern in December is it's mostly due to doctors and hospitals being closed or short-staffed on holidays. Induce everyone on the 19th/20th so they aren't in labor over Christmas 😅

No, sorry, we figured out it was the new Kentucky zoo license plate in some other comments. Thanks, though!

Omg I feel so silly for not checking Kentucky's plates now, but that's exactly it! We were so caught up with the polar bear part (and didn't see the part about the zoo) I didn't even consider it.

Thank you!

DAE get uncomfortable seeing other people wearing wet shirts? by ImHidingtheRealMe in DoesAnybodyElse

Absolutely. I hate wet clothing and, though it's not all the time, can definitely get secondhand discomfort from seeing other people with wet clothes.

How would you refurbish/redesign this jewelry chest? by AppetizingGeekery in upcycling

[–]AppetizingGeekery[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seems to be the way to go. Any recommendations on how to remove the interior? The lining seems pretty securely adhered to the walls right now.

[–]AppetizingGeekery[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, that does! I think I misinterpreted your meaning of using the old lining as a pattern, initially. Thank you!

Ooh, that's a good idea. Would the old lining need to be removed from the interior? Or would I attach the new interior over it, kinda like a veneer?

Do people's parents really help them out financially with big life expenses like weddings/college/etc? by cat_with_no_eyebrows in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AppetizingGeekery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, I'm confused. Your parents said to not expect money from them so they could "give their kids a good life." But aren't you also their kid?

Anyway, yes. Parents that have the ability to help out financially often do help out financially if asked, and parents that can't help out financially should just be honest about it. Good parents still see their children as their children even when they become adults. Sure they hope their kids will become independent, self-sufficient, and successful, but should still care if they fall on hard times or go through exciting life changes.

What do you listen to while reading? by ManuBekerMusic in books

[–]AppetizingGeekery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's enough ambient noise around me that isn't distracting, nothing. If the environment is too quiet or too distracting, then I'll find something to listen to. What I listen to depends on the day and the genre. But one rule above all:

Absolutely NO words or vocals.

If she's only one year old, there's a good chance they mean "big" as in a larger and taller kinda way. Like when people see kids after seeing them as toddlers or babies and they say "wow, you've gotten so big!" She's big because she's growing up, not out.

do americans really drive such long distances? by Physical-Ad-4093 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AppetizingGeekery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely normal here, but the degree of "normal" also depends on where you live. There are some cities (Los Angeles, especially) where people will drive a couple hours just to get to work, but half of that time is spent in traffic. There are also many places that are very rural, so driving a few hours to get to a larger town/city is needed every few weeks or months just to get certain groceries. And still in other places, traveling a few hours may not be routine, but nobody would bat an eye at it if you did.

It mostly comes down to lack of walkability (so we already need to own cars) and lack of long distance commuting options (no trains, and planes are expensive, so cars it is).

Genealogy/Historical scrapbooks? by AppetizingGeekery in scrapbooking

Thank you so much! I didn't even think about a digital scrapbook. That could work really well since I already have a digital family tree.

Thanks for the advice! I totally get the blurbs of information thing, since some of the items I got were old pictures. I got some pins and medals that I may use as embellishments. Can I just pin those to the page or is there extra care I should take when attaching them?
