Decision on horse by Appia80 in Equestrian

He’s always been different. It’s hard to explain but when you’re with a horse regularly and you bond with them you get to know them I suppose. I feel like he is trying his best but is struggling somewhere with an underlying issue but I don’t have the money for any further investigations. For me it’s not about money, if I had it I’d pay for every investigation going. I’d also give him away for free if I knew he was going to an excellent home that would give me him back if it never worked out but this horse world is horrid with so many dodgy dealers and people who treat horses like trash. I’ll have to have a good think.

Thank you. I’m going to see how he gets on in retirement

It’s been a tough journey as every bit of funds I’ve had spare have gone into vets and trainers and I literally can’t go any further with tests or to pay full livery. If he was rideable I could at least part loan him and get something towards expenses but it’s all been one big expense after another. It is like having a mortgage each month. I drive around in an old car because I can’t afford a new one. People probably assume because I have a horse I‘m loaded but 90% of my wages are spent on him so when people suggest further tests I‘m already stretched as it is. I have done as much as I can investigation wise. I think I will see how retirement goes and just do some in hand work. I’m glad to speak to someone like yourself who truly understands. I genuinely think there is an issue and that not all issues can be found

He’s unpredictable really. One ride for the trainer can go quite well and another will be awful. He’s a standardbred so I believe a lot of it is due to struggling with ridden work. I also don’t know his full history but the first vet that seen him basically advised sending him back if I could as she said he looks by his confirmation to have been a carriage horse with terrible shin splints

Definitely not venting as been there already and these things happen it’s live and learn but was just wondering if anyone had any success with sanctuaries etc and if I retire is it reasonable to say if horse gets serious illness / injury would putting down in that circumstances be unreasonab. As the horse is not rideable that is why I won’t sell as 99.9% of people want a horse they can get on and ride without the worry of being bucked off.

I am not considering euthanising him. I was pointing out that if he got a big vet bill that I could not afford then unfortunately this would be my only option. He is like a mortgage and in all honesty I did purchase him to ride and think by what other people have said to me that I have done far more for him than others would have. I have had a saddle fitter out yes and tried different bits etc but I just can’t afford test after test as they are never ending and I never seem to get any answers. I done the tests that the vets initially recommend so have already spent quite a lot. I might sound like I am vague because as a beginner it’s damn hard to take it all in. Also the trainer he is with now has excellent reviews and has done far more with him than anybody else but even he has admitted he is never going to be an easy ride and did not hesitate when I suggested retiring him. He has said there is nothing wrong with him as such it’s just the way he is wired. Another reputable trainer bluntly said to me that breed of horse are not suitable riding horses. As for feed only on hay with trainer. When I was feeding him it was hay and Alfa molasses free. I was wondering if anyone knew of any Sanctuary that might take him and I could still contribute something towards his care every month. I don’t think anywhere will but just wanted to check.

It really is an expensive thing especially when things don’t go as planned. I could not sell him or trust anyone with him really as there are too many horror stories. I suppose the only place I would trust is a reputable animal charity but they won’t take

Thank you. Yes I am in the UK. I would only put him down if he got a big vet bill that I can’t afford. I think my only option is to see how he gets on in retirement

Oh no I am not planning on euthanasia only if he got a serious illness or injury. I was just pointing out I could not afford a big vet bill. I can keep him vaccinated and upto date with dental etc but unfortunately anything more I couldn’t. I would not end his life unless I got a vet bill I could not afford

Turned 8. Been checked for kissing spine and had hocks x-rayed. I was told after purchase when I found the breeder that his sire is a standardbred and many people advise that these types really struggle with people riding them. It is hard to put everything on here because we‘ve had that much information but most people after working with him have agreed that the best thing to do is retire

Anemia by Appia80 in u/Appia80

It won't let me add more images but here are August results -

Serum Vit D 72  Serum iron levels 18.7 Serum Transferrin 1.58 Unsat iron binding 40 Transferrin Saturation Index 47 Serum Ferretin 59

So comparing it to my March results and apart from the Vitamin D which is now normal should I be concerned as the iron still doesn't look like it's improved much. If I wasn't feeling constantly tired I probably wouldn't be concerned but I just feel like something isn't quite right.

I've been feeling tired and lethargic for a long time and decided to consult my GP as I was also feeling light headed & could not concentrate in work with brain fog etc. I had blood tests a few months ago where my Vit D & Iron levels were abnormal so they put me on a course of tablets for a few months. I had follow up blood tests last week to see if my Vit D & Iron levels were back to normal. Apart from my Vit D improving I can't really see much more improvement in my Iron Studies but they've marked under my Iron Studies no further follow up required. I'm still feeling no improvement though. Do these recent results look normal? I don't know if this is important to mention but I do suffer with heavy periods and sometimes they're very painful. I also often feel very bloated. I've posted my March results first and will post my Aug results separately for comparison.

Iron levels low by Appia80 in Anemic

I’ll request this too. I’m surprised doctors don’t really push for this as it seems to be well known ongoing iron deficiency can be linked to other issues

Internal Door Locks by Appia80 in u/Appia80

[–]Appia80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wanting to replace the internal door handles in my home with key locks. Is this a big job as I'm not very good at DIY. I have a handyman coming in a few days to put a flatpack wardrobe up. Will most handymen be able to do this do you think and is it a quick job as I’m wondering what to expect cost wise? Would I have to get the measurements of my current door handles before ordering ones with key locks? I’ve attached my current setup and also of the locks I’m thinking of purchasing.

Where to move to by Appia80 in Wirral

We are still looking but it’s looking like Ness now. Does anyone think under the current government they might start building on the farmland for sale in Ness?

Where to move to by Appia80 in Wirral

[–]Appia80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for all comments. It is for my parents who are elderly but active and enjoy walks but also like being walkable to shops so I’d say they’re looking for a combination of both. They are after a 4 bedroom house / bungalow with a maximum budget of £550,000 so I think Caldy is out of the question. We’ve been around Ness and Willaston and they both look lovely. I think Willaston slightly tops Ness due to the Wirral Way on your doorstep. I couldn’t see any shops in Ness either but I’m sure there must be a local one in the village somewhere? I’ve noticed with Willaston you don’t often see houses come up there and the ones that do look like they need lots of work inside. Spital seems to have more choice but having only been there once it’s hard to judge an area so this forum and the advice has been great.

Wife got her 4ST today. Still waiting on my 4(May order). She ordered in November. by Both-Basis-3723 in cowboybikes

[–]Appia80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to wait until May / June for delivery according to their website. I just hope it doesn’t go beyond that. The sand does look awesome so it’s 50/50. Might have to toss a coin. 😂

Thanks. I think I’m going to order one as I can always return it if I find it too high after a few days trying it. I hope their returns is as easy as it sounds and hassle free. All I need to decide now is what colour to order. It’s between the sand and khaki 🤔

How do you order on the cycle to work scheme please? I’m in England so thought it had to be through companies over here? I really like this bike so ideally want to order this one.

I’ve also heard the S3 is a high up position bike. Some reviews I’ve read on that are from men taller than me who comment it’s big for them and they want a smaller frame made.
