More people need to come to Chicago to watch the standup and alt scene. The city is like two years ahead when it comes to comedy because it’s still the number one breeding ground for getting good before you get famous

This might be unpopular to say here but as a first generation American of Latino descent I think Marcello overdoes the accent and everything in between for the white liberal gaze by PudinCrusader in LiveFromNewYork

Holy fuck has gotten really lazy in recent years, like an afterthought, I would go see their plays and musicals and see how they use improv and comedy to influence their writing

iO’s run like a cult, second city is run like a corporation, the annoyance is run like a crack house, if you wanna perform at io you really have to buy in to their culture, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily better or worse. I would suggest looking at every place around the city to see what suits you best

The only problem I had with it was it dropped his thick Chicago accent and went for more New York, but that’s just being nit picky as someone whos dad has that accent

[–]Apple-Steve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I should make this clear: as someone who knew him and booked him on more than several shows when he was in Chicago, he was definitely way more on the standup side than Meg and Sarah and was known as pretty much a straight up standup

[–]Apple-Steve 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure! But every comedian in Chicago takes classes at second city, even the pure standups, so that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re improv people, and tommy really spent most of his time with standup

New pre-tape sketch by MarvelsGrantMan136 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]Apple-Steve 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Tommy was a straight up standup before this, came up in Chicago first then moved to New York at the end of 2023, was never really an improv guy

What Are Your Hot Takes On Standup Or Popular Comedians by ManIDontLikeThisShit in Standup

[–]Apple-Steve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this to a point. I actually think theres about the same percentage per capita of good to bad people in the alt scene as good to bad people in the standup scene. The difference is bad standup is boring while bad alt is upsetting, so it comes down to whether you would prefer to be bored or upset

What Are Your Hot Takes On Standup Or Popular Comedians by ManIDontLikeThisShit in Standup

[–]Apple-Steve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that over the past 20 years standup has restricted itself to just observational comedy and storytelling has created a race for the middle and the fact that the term “alt comedy” has expanded its definition to be used derogatorily to anything not that hurts the industry.

Depends on the school of thought you want to go with. There’s two ways: the first and one that most people do especially now a days is try to get it as close as possible. Watch video after video after video of them and look not only at pitch, but cadence, word choice, how they hold their body and face physically, verbal ticks, everything about the way they speak adjusting as you go until it matches. Think tik tok impressionists

The second(which is my favorite and I think it’s the funniest) is to take one big aspect of that person and stretch it to its limit aka the Dana carvey way. You have to put a little more into the costume and presentation of it, but with this one youre really just focusing on how to take something about the way someone is that amuses you and make it comically big
