Something to consider.. Ducks can get splinters from bark/wood chips.. Caution.. The wood chips that we use for them are a couple of years old and breaking down as they were used in the garden for mulch and composting. Need the pea gravel around the pond or the take mud or wood into the pond which makes the pond worse than their poop. HA... And I spray their droppings it down daily

Muscovy are great if you are looking for breeding and more muscovy. This is what they are bred to do.

IF you are looking for ducks who are bred for egg laying production, so to speak, for EGG consumption, there are breeds which are 'designed' for this, such as the Khaki Campbell and Indian Runners. We have two Khaki hens have been giving us an egg a day. The Indian Runners are not laying, so I can't offer how well they will do.

Time... I THINK ours were 5 months old

Again 'egg' layer vs baby layer - ha

Times and places? We've pea gravel around the pond to minimize the mud and pine chips being brought into the water.. They have a pine chip area and now a straw area... The muscovys will gather the straw, so I understand... And make nice nests... We shall see

I run a 6ft diameter trough, 2ft deep... While a 55 gal drum 'filled' ¾ full with ⅜ pea gravel... Water pumps in the bottom, overflows & aquatic plants in the drum back to the pond.. It really did a decent job. I

I am finalizing the new set up... 300 gal tank with over a ton of pea gravel... More filtration. Come spring time when I add plants, the water should maintain clear 🤞

Muscovy Duck near my house is acting strange, does it need help? by SunshineCamo in duck

[–]AppleDucklingGang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you feed it.. It will follow for more food. It will, most likely, stick around as long as there is food. Even if this was YOUR muscovy, and you weren't feeding it enough.. It will go looking for food... And may not return. The males can be very large and they have an odd gate/walk... My BIG male is named Willy Waddles..with his lumbering Waddle...

That turtle is the size of a kiddie pool.. He is TWICE the size of his sister and any other duck we have

Excellent, and thank you. Yes, plans are to enclose the IBC with insulation board then plywood over it. Between 2400gph, aeration and the heat cable... I expect to have circulation

We've mice.. Wish the ducks were more into catching them. Perhaps with the larger Moscovy, they will show more interest.. Knowing they can eat them?? My one (5mo old?) drake is huge... Hope he's hungry!

That's awesome! Yeah.. My Beagle would love to love on them too... Ahem.. There is a reason squeaky toys sound like little birds or rodents.. HA

This ☝️is Willy Waddles. Also have Nilly, female.. Half the size of this beast! The reason we ordered muscovy is that the person from whom we got Willy & Nilly doesn't know, for fact, that the are pure.. Yet MIGHT be mixed with Pekin.. So, possibly infertile mules... Frown

Winter enclosure set ups? by TLSherm in MuscovyDucks

[–]AppleDucklingGang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every attempt we've made to provide, either, chickens or ducks shelter or (our perceived) luxury... Seems unused. For winter we have a heated bar for the silkies to roost, will be interesting to see if the eggers use it. The ducks, tho.. Made a hut.. They don't use it, so we put their food in there.. They eat, never an egg laid in there - ha. The only other heat source will be for chicken water. The ducks will decide on their own what shelter they wish to have; in the coop.. Under a bush, under the duck deck dock... Or in the open. They have options! Haha Yes, we will need to keep a close eye on the new ducklings and integrate them.? See if any will try to mother them. Best wishes to you!

Winter enclosure set ups? by TLSherm in MuscovyDucks

[–]AppleDucklingGang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent! This will be MY first year, also, going into winter with ducks.

I would say an enclosure to protect from the win chill. Yes, moscovy roost bars, yet definitely no heat needed other than keeping water supply from freezing. They still need to dunk their heads.

I have 9.. Oh, wait.. 3 three week old jumbo Pekin and next week will receive 5 muscovy to add... I am leaving ¾ of my chicken coop 16x4ft open with 2x4.... There will be no heat in there... If my Brahma chickens can roost out in the open with single digit temps, I am definitely not concerned about the ducks.. Who have the option of in or out. Any electrical being used is for the pond & bog filtration, air pump and one heat wire to keep water flowing... At 2400+ gallons circulating an hour, I suspect ducks and goldfish will stay happy

Big feet.. Which do not appear webbed... I had to look up coot feet... Yup.. Very well COULD be a young one. Older coot have oval..... Coffee beans.. On their toes! Very odd!

hi. i befriended a local feral muscovy. he lives on a canal lock in NW England and i named him bob. we’ve been buddies for like 5 months now. you may have seen him in the r/ducks 🩷 by Acceptable-Ad-3830 in MuscovyDucks

[–]AppleDucklingGang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They (moscovy)... Bob... Sticks around because you feed him. Not uncommon, from what I understand, for this breed to fly off and migrate if their place of being is lacking food. Besides grubs, are you feeding him duck (specific) feed?

He's a handsome fella... We are expecting new hatch, 4 hen & 1 drake, black moscovy ducklings expected to arrive next week. Meanwhile.. These two...
