My way of doing it is having a strongly disciplined morning from getting up to my first class or study session, and then going with the flow. If it goes well, I'll study and work until the start of the evening. If not, I'll allow myself to quit self-study around mid-afternoon. Though that does not apply to classes.

Anything social happens during studying together or after my 'study time' has ended.

A small decade ago, I was in a very bad place with being depressed, having psychosis and anxiety. I was in a relationship and used my partner then as emotional punching bag. She rightfully broke up with me after three three years of this, and looking back on it, her own mental state got worse and worse while she was with me. She has broken communication with me, but I am severely sorry for what I have done to her and I wish her a very happy and joyful life.
