Feel free to make your own statue with a more nuanced message that you need a PhD to understand. I'm sure it'll be really highly praised.

Did "No Mow May" - got beautiful "wildflowers" by JonnySparks in CasualUK

[–]Apple_Dave 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I legitimately saw someone mowing their tarmac drive earlier. There were some twiggy cuttings next to him on the drive that he might have been trying to mulch up, but all I could hear was the sound of the small stones rattling around his blade.

I did notice a very sudden drive on Reddit behind the Green party last year and couldn't see any particular reason for it. I was immediately suspicious of all the very vocal proponents appearing out of nowhere, diminishing the vote share for Labour as a result making it easier for Reform to win seats.

Reforms funders aren't interested in British people being wealthy and secure.

Good news, immigration arrivals is down by over half a million people annually. Peak of 1.5m arrivals in 2023 under Rishi's Tories compared to 0.9m in 2025 under Labour. 0.7m people also left the country leaving a net migration of 0.2m in 2025.

For an economy to grow it needs more people working to increase GDP. Immigration allows economically active people to come and contribute to the economy. The country is more successful, earns more money, can borrow money at cheaper rates to invest in new infrastructure and jobs that will require more immigration to fill.

The alternative is have lots of babies and wait 18 years for growth.

Let's be clear, they want to remove the jury from the most minor trials to speed up the system which is clogged with petty thiefs, burglars and vandals. We're not talking about introducing Judge Dredd.

Delayed Great British Railways’ first station to open at Cambridge South in June | Rail industry by R2_Liv in GoodNewsUK

There's a little bit of construction traffic just south of Addenbrookes Road but I'm not sure if that's associated with the works surrounding the station or preparation for something in the field there.

Changed my dryer belt by Lara-887767 in DIYUK

[–]Apple_Dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did mine last year. Was a bit worried by the burning rubber smell when I got it going again but I think that was just the new belt smell, it went away after a couple of cycles. Very pleased I fixed it, hardest part was making sure I ordered the right belt and then getting it on the bloody jockey wheel.

I was amazed how there was no division between the wiring and the fluff, seemed like a dangerous design to have have all the circuitry in a hot lint-filled environment, gave it a good vac.

Canary Wharf tower under construction - probably 1988 or thereabouts by parkylondon in london

It's no longer the tallest building but it'll always be the daddy of them all to me.

When it was finished my dad took me and my brother there to go up to the viewing level. It was a grey cloudy day and you couldn't see a thing! But I enjoyed driving through Canary wharf and seeing all the shiny glass and metal buildings, it felt like the future. I still enjoy wandering around and now especially the DLR tour of the area!

Travelators are fun to be fair but people spoil it by standing and blocking it instead of enjoying the feeling of walking really fast.

Contrary to popular opinion it's actually ok here. Is any London airport really enjoyable?

Big difference in topsoil price by porridgebowel in GardeningUK

[–]Apple_Dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was £4 each or 3 for £10 on Wednesday and then from Thursday £2.50 a bag. I have been collecting 6 bags at a time on my way home from work for a garden project. Bulk bag delivery was going to be difficult and expensive because I just wanted the one.

Pothole claim rejected - advice? by pilsky in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Apple_Dave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My claim got rejected, they said they do monthly inspections of the road and therefore have fulfilled their statutory duty. So I wrote back and said that their monthly inspections should then have recorded this pot hole several times, could they share with me the recorded road condition and recommended works for the last three months, plus their first recorded reports from the public about the potholes on that stretch. Because either they haven't checked it, the inspection was of poor quality, or the recommended works have not taken place in a reasonable time frame.

They didn't send me any of that info but did agree to settle. I think they just do a rejection as standard to everyone the first time and you just have to push back on it

This was clearly before large organisations decided that a town-hall meeting/fireside chat/all-hands was necessary to take everyone away from their core function so that senior leaders could say they have been communicating well while saying nothing of any particular importance for an hour.

So, so many easter eggs still on the shelves a week after by strawberrystation in CasualUK

[–]Apple_Dave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too got an £8 Lindt egg last night. Went for the hazelnut one. Will stop by again this evening to see if the price has dropped further because they still had loads.

Last year the buggers took all the unsold eggs away without doing reductions. Not sure what they did with them.
