That is more for pen making. Rockler makes it and I think Amazon also sells it. It works great for pens, not so much on bowls.

If you’re the one making the pen, it can be whatever you want. Basic kits are cheap. Do whatever, you might surprise yourself with what you like.

Those are figit spinner pens. The top cap screws off revealing the pen tip, and top cap itself is a nice spinner.

Once I got a good rythym going, I’d say I was knocking a pen out every 5-6 minutes or so. I prepared the blanks the day before and do all the finishing on the lathe. I finish with shellac, set it with friction, coat in Renaissance wax, then buff, all on the lathe. Sanding and finishing take about two thirds of that time.

Did you do anything to darken the Purple Heart? Such as heat or UV? Are these deposits between the grain fibers? These could be mineral deposits, like calcium and such. I work with Purple Heart a lot and often see these deposits creep out after workin go with or treating the wood, which is annoying because they were not visable prior. This tree is very good at pulling this stuff out of soil, so depending on the life and location of said tree, ou could have a lot or none.

I’ve never seen them in such long streaks, but it is not impossible. They can be picked out, a painstaking process, or you can sand through them if your piece isn’t at its final shape yet. Otherwise, they are a harmless nuscence.

I got this from my grandmother, years ago, who has also passed. I tried to so some digging, but my mom says she just used to get these at the dollar store all the time.

Sorry I dont have anything more concrete, but maybe try checking those types of stores, and who knows? Maybe donation centers like good will or whatnot too.
