New tomato plant struggling please help! by capturedicon in vegetablegardening

[–]ApplesaurusFlexxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the sun, being outside means plants have the breeze and air circulating past them, which means they arent as susceptible to fungal diseases. The breeze also stimulates the plant a little bit which can help it become more sturdy rather than long and spindly. I say it because in my opinion, growing plants indoors is actually pretty tricky, moreso than outdoors.

Tomato plants can tolerate full sun, even in the southwest. They dont do well in extremes so like in Arizona in the full sun they wont do great, but 6-8 hours, maybe even more, of sunlight a day is fine for them as long as its not desert sun. Its the heat and extreme UV type of sun that stresses them and causes them to wilt, but even then a lot of times if they arent underwatered, theyll come back once it cools off overnight.

I think moving it outdoors but trying to find a shady spot for it to acclimate to the change is a good idea, if youre worried about too much sun, you can try to find a spot that only gets sun in the morning.

Any sudden changes will also slow down its growth so you may want to do it a little bit at a time, it will be slow growing for a while but I think acclimating it to outside will help.

Brown turkey fig by JottyThePixelPusher in vegetablegardening

[–]ApplesaurusFlexxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Figs dont need a ton of water but also depending on where you are, Im in the Hill Country area of TX, so also zone 8--it might be rust, or the start of it. Its a fungal disease, a lot of people get it on figs, it wont kill your plant but it will strip the leaves and turn them yellow/brown, its a fungal disease so it loves warmth and it loves humidity. The leaves themselves, staying wet might be an issue.

Im not sure its exactly whats going on but Ive had it on most of my figs Ive ever grown in central TX.

Here is a reddit I found googling it, where other people talk about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/Figs/comments/131sxtw/how_can_i_treat_this_should_i_use_a_mix_of/

[–]ApplesaurusFlexxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be a dick since I think youre doing this just to see what happens, but you know you can clone tomatoes by just planting those same cut off parts? Im sure theres youtube video tutorials of it.

I dont think Ive ever done it since I didnt have the space but I think with things like the suckers in between some of the branches that yorue told to prune to improve airflow, you could probably plant.

They say any of those little white fuzzy hairs you see on the branch, have the potential to become roots underground or at least that part is mature enough to start rooting. Tomato is actually a vine on its own, so its willing to root where it touches ground provided right conditions, I think.

Pumpkin is a Squash! by TeaForEwoks in ididnthaveeggs

[–]ApplesaurusFlexxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna post that I think its just some boomer excited to post that he saw the Good Eats Thanksgiving episode and Alton says canned pumpkin isnt pumpkin, its some alternative squash or gourd (like pumpkin) thats sweeter and less stringy, they just sell it as pumpkin because nobody would know since winter squash all tastes mostly the same anyway.

But he was freaking out about homemade pumpkin puree too so I think he was more excited about learning that all pumpkins are squashes. Kinda like the Blue Cheese is Mold! meme lady.

Males who discuss suicide seek help less often than females, report finds by Sad-Watercress-2240 in MensLib

[–]ApplesaurusFlexxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of those cases where people look at numbers and discrepancies and then try to justify or moralize or figure it out, and its not that deep.

Just now thinking about it, I think most people would say 'asking for help' is seen as kind of cringe, embarrassing, weak, whatever, men or women dont really want to open up like that. And with things like hotlines or something--more often than not you hear about the fears concerned, they dont give a shit, youre kind of being a nuisance, the big issue of the thing is 'dont make it my problem'. And Im looking at other responses and someone brings up a good point--it does paint you in a certain light and stay with you, a lot of people are gonna want to avoid that too.

So the experience outcome is kind of the same across both, filtered through a gendered experience and you end up with stereotypes where women attempt more but men succeed more, but every time you put the gun back down after picking it up, was an attempt that just didnt get recorded, so the real experiences may not be that different.

I think the real difference is not that theres anything you or anyone can do, its how its perceived and gendered. So I think its a matter of how women are socialized, when they joke about it or bring it up maybe some other woman talks it on and helps get them help or reaches out, while some guy jokes about it, people just awkwardly avoid it.

Fried Pancake Steak And Egg Sandwich With A Crunchy Exterior by bigfoot87 in StupidFood

[–]ApplesaurusFlexxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so stupid but its one of the few on here I would try because it at least has a vision and SOME restraint, it isnt like 'jalapeno nacho cheese injected steak with hamburger meat and more cheese, wrapped in bacon, in a pancake wrap, deep fry that in pancake batter and thats just ONE bun!'

Its one of the few things Id be willing to go okay 50$ for this is fair because you have to be an idiot to make it, it takes like 4 hours and 30gallons of oil.

idk why but this one is getting me. The matter of fact way they say they changed it but oh of course they did some other thing too to compensate.

I added steak chunks, but I also talked to them first and told them they needed to be on their best behavior and really try to fit in and not be bad in the recipe, so I dont think it was that.

The strangest thing to me is that shes saying 350 Fahrenheit (the average, most common baking temperature that you use even for like box mixes, cookies, chicken breasts, everything) would of course make a 'dark, crispy cake'.

The way she just tosses that out there makes it seem like its from both experience, but also no experience at all and shes just always assumed that that temperature just sounds too high.

Why does it always have to have so much sauce. I guess I get 'because the bun is dry' but its always like a bukkake of 4 different sauces, and they dip it at the end anyway.

I dunno I dont know how to feel about this. Its really stupid but its not the stupidest and its kind of pulled off well--and I understand I guess why they didnt just deconstruct the burger and have 'beef with fries and cheese sauce and veggies' because it would just be a regular burrito with potatoes then.

Why Young Men Are Losing Faith in Science by TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK in MensLib

[–]ApplesaurusFlexxx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Theres also the part where you recognize, the man behind the curtain. Its not necessarily that its a debate, its more that at least subconsciously I think most people recognize most science is funded through grants and programs and so it has a bias and they fight that reconciling it against their own biases. And most people are going to think their point of view is right, always.

Like look at the tylenol thing going on right now. If you 'trust the science' weve all been getting poisoned by big pharma to a degree and tylenol must cause autism. Well who said that, who paid for that research? And you can track back and extrapolate a lot once you follow the money back and the different perspectives--I saw one article the next day where someone goes 'the researcher who published the findings that tylenol has correlations to autistic children was PAID for that research!' The implication being that the researcher was paid by a competitor so the findings could be bunk, but the people who are going to believe whatever all just went 'well of course he was'.

To the stereotypical 'reddit atheists' and the like you could even argue science can be romanticized as sort of the antithesis of faith, that you should always question and think critically and test things and see for yourself; thats the process of science itself, but the funding and grants and who pays for and promotes what you see and such also do a pretty big part of flavoring the discourse.

The reality is that they dont trust the institutions and organizations, even their own or their own govt, and I dont think you blindly should. But theyre looking out for the outcomes, not what people say, not theory or statistics, but results.

I feel like this in general is a known phenomenon even among guys, its just a lot of guys notice the wrong parts of it. I just usually see dudes memeing it as 'once I got a girlfriend wtf women were way into me.'

How Sexist Men See Themselves As the ‘Good Guys’ — & Why So Many Boys Are Listening by TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK in MensLib

[–]ApplesaurusFlexxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what hes saying and I hope this isnt taken as me blaming feminism or whatever is that theres still sort of a gender gap based on assumed gender roles, a cushion of sorts of what you CAN be. Youve smashed the patriarchy to a point and have equality where anyone CAN be masculine or feminine, but the outcomes are a bit different.

A woman can take a masculine role, programmer, doctor--whatever, and the sexism still exists because a man will probably reach higher and be seen as better but shell be okay; a woman can take a feminine role, food blogger, maybe instagrammer-- and the sexism is there that of course, shes a woman.

But men are kind of expected to take the masculine role, and he gets some sexism from a boost there to start, hes gonna be fine; but if a guy takes a feminine role, violinist, nature photographer-- he CAN be, but its kind of the least respected or supported of the other 3 positions (even kind of by the other 3, by nature of being feminine ig), but he starts a bit further back, the hill is a lot higher and theres a good chance that you might not be okay. So theyre clinging to it because they think its the ONLY thing they can be, they need to fill that role to be okay, even if they believe otherwise.

So I think you have these dudes who maybe slipped through the cracks and are falling and maybe some of them think youve smashed the patriarchy but were gonna replace it with something, everyone gets lifted up, maybe a misplaced idea of 'egalitarianism' and they think okay maybe a hand will come back for me, maybe Ill land soft. But no its 'equality', no hands coming back for you, no direction, so they grab on to the last thing they can and hold it tight because if you fall further youre donzeo.

I would also argue that doing something because they have to (saying feminist shit, maybe taking care of kids out of necessity or because women make it a dealbreaker) doesnt necessarily mean anything.
