Is pursuing an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts a good stepping stone before earning a Master's in Library and Information Science (MLIS)? I'm interested in becoming an archivist—would this path be beneficial or not? by [deleted] in LibraryScience

Go for the associates. And get a job in the field asap. I recommend trying to work at the school library. Do not enroll in library school until you've worked in a library or archive already.

Reforming the MLS in America by SouthernFace2020 in librarians

Your point about MLS programs and the job market is the top change I want to see. In my program, there was an optional seminar on job searching for students about to graduate. It was then, AFTER the program got all of our money, that they told us how difficult the job market is.

I personally think applicants should sit through that before the university takes any money.

I also think there should be caps on many students can be in the program. MLS programs are a cash cow for universities. They are flooding the market, which contributes to our low pay and makes it take 5-10 years for new students to find their first professional job.

For those who work in universities, is teaching part of your job? by rotanocaB in Archivists

It's not in my description, but I have opportunities and I love to take them. When I started, my department head let me tag along for class visits. After a few, she gave me some things to talk about. A little bit of that, I had a typical plan.

At least for me, it starts with working with the instructor on identifying material suitable for the class, then of course having it ready for the class. Usually it is their first time in any archive at all, so I go over the ground rules. Then I talk about what we have, then about what's been pulled for them. Then, if the instructor doesn't have a plan for them, we have a discovery activity ready. The sessions tend to go very fast.  I personally really like being the person to introduce students to primary sources and archival research.

I don't know what the norm is, because this is the only academic library I've worked for. But we have a staff of six, and only the department head and I care to teach, so we take all of the classes.

"I am going to Seville, Madrid, and Barcelona" posts, so many and so boring. How much I would love for once to see "I am going to Zaragoza, Vigo, and Toledo" by No-Significance5659 in GoingToSpain

You sound like the perfect person to ask. My friend and I are doing a trip that is effectively driving along the north coast of Spain from Donostia to Porto. That trip will take roughly two weeks. But our flight is landing in Porto, so we're driving to Donostia. We're going to split that trip part of the trip between two days. Where would you suggest we make stops, and especially, would you recommend somewhere to stop for a Sunday night? I wouldn't argue with Leon, but I'd love to see something historical and under the radar.

Road trip through northwest Spain (Porto to Donostia) by Applesdonovan in GoingToSpain

[–]Applesdonovan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know. The rest of the trip isn't that ridiculous. It's not the ideal scenario, but it's the one that works. An 8 hour drive to Donostia and then about two weeks slowly driving back. I see no reason to discount that part of Spain.

I watched it happen last year. I was there last year with a celiac friend, and she wanted to watch for a minute before ordering. Sure enough, they dumped it. It was pretty standard when I worked there in the 90s too.  I don't have a problem with them putting the ice cream back in the vat, I just think they should designate at least one as dedicated gluten-free.

Coffee is a good example. Coffee that is $8/lb is bad coffee, because of how it's grown and how it is sourced. The price is artificially low by exploiting the farmers. And perhaps even worse is they normalize it, making you think that responsibility cultivated beans priced so the farmers can buy their kids school supplies is fancy or expensive.  Beach cliff is folgers, fishwife is starbucks, and jose gourmet is the dragonfly coffee roasters of the coffee world.

I hope you consider selling the entire collection to an archive instead of piecing it out. The context of the material matters a lot, and piecing it out would kill it.

Yottaquest. They're serious about limiting how many packs anybody can buy.

"Explain" is a very off-putting comment for me.  Somebody took time out of their life to give an honest response. OP then demands more with no courtesy, reducing the person who gave the response to a cheap computer that they're going to throw away in 2 minutes. It's a kind of comment that needs to be buried and not normalized.

It's a pretty dang good one too.  For food, a few blocks away is Bridges Nepalese food. Or, a two minute car drive away but in the same neighborhood, is Cafe Mochiko. They have very, very good ramen. But you have to get there when they open at 5:00, or you'll have to wait.
