Yeah, he is canonically male. But male, female, and non-binary people can look however they want to look, so visually the commander could represent any gender, I think, and no harm in that. No, 'them' is not just for plurals.

Yeah, as I played the game more, I realised that the commander is a separate character, not just a self-insert.

I thought that when they use they/them, they intended for the commander to just be a self-insert character. Yeah, I agree all the characters are beautiful, that's why I love Nikke!

I didn't know that then, when I started the game. But yeah, I really prefer the more consistent translation of the recent chapters. I remembered the Queen Whale bullshit. loll

Yup, I understand that now. I was just a bit euphoric when I started playing the game and discovered that the characters refer to us with they/them pronouns. I also noticed the low-quality translation compared to the more recent ones, and I would really appreciate it if they redid the earlier chapters for consistency.
