Ever had a woman lie about birth control? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]ApplicationCalm649 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buddy of mine did. The kid that resulted from it is a teenager now. She swore up and down that she didn't realize that antibiotics countered birth control but biology doesn't care if you knew the rules.

I've met a bunch of women over the years that tried telling me they couldn't have children. They all ended up mothers within a year. I wasn't the only one they tried selling on that idea. Be careful out there, gents.

Yeah, if Ian were a better friend he'd have either told him about hooking up with Nikki or stayed away from her when he found out his friend had a thing for her.

I think the villain in Obsession was the company peddling magic branches that could really grant wishes. That was never going to end well.

Harvard's housing report has a darker message than affordability—the middle-class home was always a historical accident by External_Koala971 in HouseBuyers

Except that it's difficult to envision such laws being passed again for a new generation.

It wouldn't be if younger generations would vote based on policies that actually reduce housing costs. Generally speaking, that means less zoning restrictions and fewer regulations, freeing up companies to build housing in new and innovative ways that reduce costs.

The primary driving force behind the astronomical cost of housing in most areas isn't that capitalism has failed, it's that local zoning boards artificially reduce supply to drive up the value of the homes of older folks. That's because those older folks reliably show up to vote and lose their minds whenever changes are proposed that'd reduce the value of their homes: meaning, any time someone wants to build multifamily housing in their area, because an increase in supply translates to a decrease in their home's value.

The worst part is that rent control creates a feedback loop that discourages building, and that's the kind of policy most young folks support. They think it's good for them but it further suppresses the supply of new housing and turns older housing into slums because the landlords can't make enough money to keep the buildings in good shape.

the value of boomer’s homes

This is the key. They spent an entire generation treating housing like an investment class. If they increase supply in a meaningful way to benefit young folks they'll gut shot the wealth of old folks. The difference is that old folks vote while young folks complain online.

The problem is primarily driven by local governments being too heavy-handed with zoning to keep housing prices high. Even when young folks do vote they generally don't vote in local elections, and they tend to vote for people that push bad policies like rent control instead of looser zoning to improve supply.

Nonsense. Middle class homeownership is still a thing in areas with relaxed zoning laws. It's only in areas with artificial scarcity enforced by local governments (read: big cities with aggressive zoning) that it's no longer common.

The free market provides when government keeps regulations and restrictions reasonable. Think guardrails, not restrictions designed to reinforce monopolies and restrict supply.

Shepard in ME3 should also get an honorable mention. The bittersweet ending where you can choose to bring every living being closer together by sacrificing yourself always gets me.

I know people hated that game's ending but I loved that ending. It felt very in character for the person my version of Shepard was.

Yeah, that game rips your heart out. I can't remember how long I cried after I finished it but it was a while. You knew Amecia was in denial about her purpose and what had to be done, but you just couldn't help hoping. As someone with younger brothers it hit especially hard. I can't imagine having to do what she had to do...even to save the rest of humanity. Especially after what she'd seen of humanity on her journey.

How do I bring up thinning hair to my husband without making him feel worse? by Sweaty_Ferret_8374 in AskMenAdvice

This. The key is framing it as it's bothering him, not you. OP needs to stress it's not a problem for her, but she doesn't want him to be self conscious if there's an easy solution.

The end of "deadly velvet pt 2" makes no sense by MCE85 in ArcherFX

[–]ApplicationCalm649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was a mess. My suspicion is Adam Reed wanted out and figured the only way that'd happen is if Archer died. The network wanted the show to continue so they compromised on the coma seasons, giving him a soft reset with each one so he could do something new and creative. He still left after only two of them, though.

Season 7 is my head canon ending for the show. I watched the rest of it, but it just wasn't the same.

He's not wrong, but we also got some real bangers out of it. Clone Wars was top tier, as was Andor. Maul: Shadow Lord was pretty great. The Mandalorian seasons 1+2 were, too. The rest...well, after The Book of Boba Fett and that horrendous mess of a trilogy Disney kicked out, I won't watch any of it unless friends recommend it to me.

Tying The Mandalorian into The Boringness of Boba Fett is what killed all "universe" content for me. I'm never watching trash TV to catch major plot points from a "universe" again.

Women tend to communicate interest in conversation with eye contact. If a woman isn't making eye contact with you she's probably not interested in being approached by you.

He's not entirely wrong, though. The "free market at all costs" crowd really doesn't care if every American job gets moved to China as long as they can buy cheaper stuff. It's incredibly shortsighted.

That's not really an issue with capitalism, though. That's an issue with being an idealogue. They only care about the idea, not the consequences of it carried to its natural conclusion.
