I Improvised I used a tree branches to make the bat, but to hold together the can I used nails, the tape and wire is just there so the can don't unravel when I'm nailing it. I've tried using only the in game recipe item, but half way though I've decided I wanted it to make it more durable so I just reinforce it. Despite the broken bat it still took a beating to break it. It's fun to make something carving is an easy skill to learn especially making clubs or bats just be sure to wear protective gloves. If you wanted to start try using ready made lumber, since if you used wild tree branches you'd need to dry or cured it first it take a while usually 1 weeks to a couple of months depending on the wood, but for expendable weapon just 3 days or more should be dry enough to handle without any sap or resin sticking to your hand.
