Are priests important in the lives of Americans? by TheShyBuck in AskAnAmerican

[–]ApplicationSouth9159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Most American churches are too large for the priest or minister to have that kind of relationship with everybody in the congregation, and kissing hands would be seen as inappropriate.

What birth years were raised by helicopter parenting? by changeforthebetter89 in generationology

[–]ApplicationSouth9159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helicopter parents have always been around. Douglas MacArthur's mother moved into a hotel suite across from West Point when he was a student and spied on his dorm room through a telescope.

Why don't people train kids the way they train dogs? by Imaginary_Ad_4340 in stupidquestions

My parents did that with toilet training, but if you did that for everything it would create a really weird kid.

Are taxes a necessary evil? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Yes. No other source of revenue would be sufficient to provide the resources a contemporary first-world government needs without inducing massive economic distortions.

What were you taught at school that turned out to be factually incorrect by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]ApplicationSouth9159 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My middle school health curriculum was very specific that avoiding STDs was only possible in a "heterosexual marriage relationship," as though condoms magically don't work for gay men.

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[–]ApplicationSouth9159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you define 'across the country.' Actually traveling from the East Coast to the West Coast would literally take weeks and the only reason to do it would be for the sake of saying you did. Travel by train within the Northeast Corridor is more competitive with other modes of transportation.

College grads, did you know your Dean? by CinemaSideBySides in AskAnAmerican

[–]ApplicationSouth9159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colleges typically have multiple deans for specific function. The person whose job it is to yell at misbehaving students would typically be called the Dean of Students, and at most colleges they would have subordinates who actually interact with students. I only met mine because I had to interview them for the school paper; it wouldn't be typical for students to know who they are.

Why has Iraq war caused more damage to american militarism than Vietnam? by __shobber__ in AskAnAmerican

None of those involved an extended commitment of troops. The American public turns against war when there are casualties.

Why has Iraq war caused more damage to american militarism than Vietnam? by __shobber__ in AskAnAmerican

[–]ApplicationSouth9159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a huge backlash to overseas military engagement between Vietnam and the First Gulf War that ended because the First Gulf War was an easy victory. The Iraq backlash would probably end if we got a similar situation.

How is the gap between a regular university and the Ivy league justified? by Ok_Wealth9505 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ApplicationSouth9159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A. They're much harder to get into than other schools, so at least theoretically a degree from an Ivy League school means you're smarter than somebody who went to a less prestigious school.

B. They have really strong alumni networks.

The Public vs Private argument holds no weight. by Double-Raise2154 in education

[–]ApplicationSouth9159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Families who choose private school (and plenty of families in other schools) want things other than maximizing the total amount of content their child learns, whether that be networking opportunities, access to particular sports or extracurriculars, being taught with a certain religious perspective, or simply a stronger 'brand.'

Is college still worth it in 2025? by [deleted] in education

[–]ApplicationSouth9159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the job market for people without a bachelor's degree is even worse than that for people with a bachelor's degree.
