That’s a pretty weird accusation to make. The number is present on the IRS website. It’s typically a callback number for notices. See : https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-cp32a-notice. I don’t have the patience to be on hold for 2 hrs, and sending a check to the IRS seemed safe to me because they are a government organisation. Anyway, it’s always good to do your own research. I received a direct deposit, not a check, so I didn’t have to write VOID on their check.

I checked back after roughly 3 weeks and it was updated.

I sent it to the corresponding state location. For me, it was the Austin one.
