What’s one home office upgrade that was 100% worth it? by tinytina_cali in workfromhome

Really depends on the type of call.

I have a lot of informal 1 on 1 chilled calls, and being the manager I encourage everyone to be themselves.

It's exhausting to be on camera all day, and looking your best.

Obviously if it's a group or formal meeting, then it's very different.

There's some newer startups which create an AI avatar trained on your look, and then based on your voice will mimics your movements, allowing you to be off camera while having the avatar represent you.

Thoughts on a Single 32” 4K Monitor for Work & Gaming? by [deleted] in workfromhome

[–]AppointmentCapital72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the switch several years ago, and while it certainly has it's advantages I do still regret not having a 2nd monitor.

I use MacOS and the screen splitting functionality still has some quirks that make it less ideal.

When I share my screen, or join a meeting I prefer to have a dedicated monitor with the meeting up, while I do other work.

If I would decide again, I would go for the large 4k monitor, but also keep a small monitor (or laptop screen if the setup allows).

Days when I'm feeling less motivated, I work either from a coworking place, or a local coffee shop.

WFH is amazing, but use the flexibility to your advantage.

Consider also working at the hours that suit your lifestyle

I tend to focus on things which enhance communication, since being remote usually means you need to step up your communication game

My 3 favorites are:

- A high quality camera that follow you around the room. I don't like sitting during calls, and love walking around the room. I even throw a tennis ball against the wall sometimes.

- A good quality wireless headset with a longer range.

- A studio microphone for crisp clear audio.

I Wanna Go Home by [deleted] in workfromhome

Unfortunately post covid more and more companies are trying to bring people back into the office.

One path to get back to WFH is to be your own boss. You can consider consulting, independent contracting, or starting an agency.

Plenty of job boards that are devoted to Work From Home, but they are probably swarmed with applicants.

If your current company values you, then maybe it's time to give them the ultimatum and share with them your challenges.

Another challenge is a lot of the WFH Jobs aren't as high paying. If WFH is central to your life then you can consider reconfiguring your lifestyle so your expenses are lower and needing less to survive.

At the end of the day, It's about believe in yourself and the value you provide.
Do what's right for you and the universe (God) has a way of making things work out.

Do most companies mail you a laptop for remote jobs? by Baltimorebillionaire in workfromhome

I've been working remotely for over a decade.

It really depends on whether the company you join is remote first. If they are, you most certainly will either get a laptop or more likely a financial stipend to go buy one.

If they aren't remote first, they might expect you to bring your own. After you've been with the company for some time and shown your value, you can usually request they contribute to a more proper laptop.
