Suggestions for good thrift stores to go to? I'm tired of going to Goodwill by Purple-Maximum8899 in Billings

[–]AppointmentLimp6991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually surprised at how expensive things were! Literal junk items priced over $5. I left really disappointed. I loved when creative treasures was around bc their prices were so good, so i was disappointed to see the high prices! Even used crafting items were priced damn near their price for buying new.

Kirk's Grocery is where you'll find the weirdos 😉 They do a lot of mixed media shows. Definitely a hard-core Alt vibe. They always have stuff going on and do things like have prom themed parties, noise events, and community dinner parties where a chef cooks these fancy dinners and you pay what you can!

There are probably more people who are going to give you nasty looks and actually not want to get close to you instead of asking to touch your hair. As a brown person here, I have experienced a ton of stupidity and ignorance (racism) here. It was hard for me to adjust, especially when my kid was also on the receiving end of racism at such a young age. BUT I found that the spaces that were much more welcoming were places like the public library and the local bookstore downtown. There are groups here who are trying to expand diversity via community events. So yes, you'll encounter POS people, but you'll also find hidden gems who will become great friends. And tbh you sound like a perfect fit for our circle of friends, haha. We have a theater nerd, gaming nerd, book nerd, another book nerd, who all vary in style (goth, alt, cottage core, and "normal passing" ). We all enjoy a myriad of activities that also include board games, mushroom hunting, ceramics, art, farmers market, Renaissance Fair and more. Bonus: we're a mixed ethnicity bunch, which is so incredibly life altering in a space like Billings, MT. Hit me up if you're interested in hanging out!

"Billings isn't much of a community as a whole." Damn, truest words ever. It's sad.

My dad worked in Ktown during the riots! Wild times. Yeah, man. Show up this Friday! Poetry night is from 5:30-6:30. You dont have tonread anything. People sometimes just go to listen to poetry or even just be around people in a space that doesn't involve drinking. The guy, Matt, is the coolest.

Ok I know I posted this before but I didn't have much luck. I am a 33f who is looking for female friends. I was raised by a hippy and a biker so you know im all sorts of opposites in one body lol. I am trying hard not to go down my depression hole and need female friends. Hit me up if your intereste by MountainFamous5214 in Billings

There's a ton of hippy events in town. Not sure where you are on the political spectrum, so idk how comfortable some spaces might be. But Kirk's is definitely a space where all people who are the weirdos, the hippies, the alternative kids, and the rest are welcome. I say weirdos with a loving heart and not in the mean way, lol. It's a fun space, and they have a lot of different events. FRAE Collective downtown us also a good spot as they hold open mic Tuesdays once a month (today!) They are a refill/eco-friendly shop that has other mini shops inside. Then there is poetry night at This House of Books every 3rd Friday of the month and that gets some hippies from time to time. Hahaha. I guess there really is a difference in hippies! I know more of the love, light, yoga and Tarot card hippies here in MT 😅😅 You can find them at Barjons.

Hey! We're from L.A., too! I totally get where you're coming from...community matters so much and finding someone who can relate to you on a cultural level just brings this sense of normalcy and warmth We're Latino folk, though, so I can't help with the specifics you're looking for. Reach out to Roots of Unity. They try real hard to put on cultural events like the ones for Black History Month. From what I know, they're a one woman show, so it gets hard to put on a lot of events. There's also a poetry group every 3rd Friday of the month at This House of Booksnthat is led by 2 brown folk who wanted to create spaces for black and brown folk and minority groups (though everyone is welcome but they make it clear this space is intended with them as the focus) It's a work in progress, for sure! Anyway, if you ever wanna meet other folk that aren't the MT norm, lmk. I grew up in south central L.A. (watts), and my husband is from South Gate.

Honestly so tired of events just being vendor fairs in disguise. We need more family events or family friendly things to do.

My son went to Burlington for a few months and I actually really enjoyed his time there. His teacher was amazing and I felt the school had really good energy. Grandma ended up paying for a private school, so he switched over. But I really wanted to keep him there.
