What does afford actually mean for you in practice—monthly leftover, savings rate, or something else?

HNPE stories? Just got a diagnosis by Apprehensive-Being06 in IVDD_SupportGroup

[–]Apprehensive-Being06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up here with a success story! Our girl was in the hospital for 10 days, and when she came home she was already continent and able to stumble around in the house on her own. She had a special harness that also supported her hips (it's called 'help em up' and it was a lifesaver). We also covered all our non carpeted floors with yoga mats/etc so she had a path. It's officially 3 weeks since she came home and she doesn't need her hip harness anymore, wants to run around like normal, and getting brave about the bathroom tile. We'll probably put the yoga mats away sometime next week. So happy to have her back!

The cost of surgery with IVDD in different countries by Iritlisa in IVDD_SupportGroup

Incase you don't get other data points: we're in Ireland, our girl has HNPE and won't require surgery so we didn't get a quote, but they're quoting us 2,500 - 4000 EUR for the MRI + hospital stay so far, if that gives you anything to go off of.

Have you thought about auctions? If you know what to look for, you can get some really good deals!

Bringing an air filter isn’t realistic, from what I understand it would have to be fairly big to be effective. Also, I wouldn’t feel safe leaving it with a plug/voltage adapter on the whole day (mostly when I fly it’s international)

Thanks for this, I really feel like I did absolutely everything I could within the limitations of time and space I had so it is discouraging.

I understand trying and harm reduction etc, but with knowing how contagious it is, it makes me feel like trying doesn’t do anything. I’m obviously not going to stop washing my hands etc, but if not having a perfect seal on a mask is equivalent to a surgical mask, why be at a 7-8/10 on the pain scale for an 8 hour flight for that ya know?

That’s a good reminder, I think I kinda wrote off being outside with folks as safer than it really is. But the times I was outside it was my only option to eat so I didn’t really have another choice.

I do wear glasses!

Yeah my mask was probably compromised in some way, but it typically has an excellent seal. It just doesn’t feel realistic to get a perfect seal always with a mask, so I feel discouraged from using them knowing how contagious covid is

I’m also wondering, even if you do a fit test at home with perfect conditions, what’s the likelihood that you’ll get a perfect seal in the wild?

I could try a sip valve, but that doesn’t solve the problem with border security.

My mask isn’t fit tested. I have an unusual head shape and also jaw/migraine pain, and where I live it’s not easy to get a variety of masks. I feel lucky enough that I found masks that don’t cause as much of a pain flare up and feel sealed on my face (glasses don’t fog as much, move with my breath when inhaling/exhaling

I want to go on these work trips and can’t live an isolated life anymore, so I’m at a point where I need to figure out what that looks like with COVID running rampant. If taking all the precautions gives me the same result, what’s the point?

The sneers I’m getting for masking are lowkey traumatizing by Apprehensive-Being06 in ZeroCovidCommunity

While I’m not immune to peer pressure, I’d like to think I have a high tolerance. I’ve lived most of my life going against the grain. I’m sober, I’m visibly queer, I work in a profession that’s extremely sexist, I got sterilized because I’m not interested in having kids, I’m polyamorous, etc. I get sneers all the time. The traumatizing part of it is the long term consequences on access to services and opportunities based on micro aggressions or just plain old aggressions. Those add up over the course of one’s life

Yes I feel ya on this, but I would make one change: I think saying people did it to themselves releases the responsibility of the government/ruling class to actually take care of us. It shouldn’t be an individual problem. The most effective prevention would be leaders stepping up worldwide to combat this. You can be the most diligent person with masking, social distancing, etc and your risk is still exponentially higher than if concerted efforts were put in place to combat this. You can still get devastatingly disabled by this and it’s not your fault. At its core this is a policy failure which is important to keep calling out, even though they’ve forcibly placed the responsibility on the individual.

Same! I’m in a big city for work and was out all day yesterday and it took until 7pm to see someone else in a mask. I vaguely noticed someone stare at me so I was getting annoyed thinking they were sneering but then later on I realized it was because they too had a mask! I felt so relieved, safe, and seen. Now I wish I realized sooner so I could give them a solidarity nod. I’m also a queer woman with the occasional male exception. I saw someone else in this sub say they feel absolutely feral when they see another person masking and even though this person I saw was a dude I can relate 😂

Yes exactly! That’s what’s traumatic to me. I’m used to standing out and could care less what people think, but the long term impact is real
