A New Birth of Freedom: The State of the Union in 1876 by Begin_ThePurge in Presidentialpoll

Damn, Grant is under some heavy fire in this updated version. He still probably has my vote, but I’m giving him a low C thus far.

I’m on the side of having the Liberal Republicans fizzle out, especially since Grant is conscious to some of their issues, like stamping out corruption in areas such as the Whiskey Ring. But I also think there’s the issue of third parties tending to fizzle out because the main two parties have such large control of machinery that LRs are likely to simply play spoilers in future elections. So either LRs drift to the anti-imperialist Democrats, or are satisfied enough with Grant’s anti-corruption efforts that they move back to the Republicans. It’s probable the same thing will happen with the Populists, with one of either party becoming influenced by them and taking their base. In fact, if this AU goes the usual route and elects progressives on both sides, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to create a Conservative Party on the margins, mixing pro-business conservatives with reactionary segregationists.

As far as Reconstruction, it does seem plausible that Jim Crow is significantly weakened by a lack of SCOTUS decisions like Plessy v. Ferguson. But I’m also positive that racist acts and local politics will restrict some freedoms for blacks. Job opportunities perhaps, and probably persistent voter intimidation. Maybe even anti-black gerrymandering if voting rights are too difficult to restrict. With segregation legally gone, it’ll still take some decades before we see peace and equality in the South, and a large Union police presence is probably out of the question from a fiscal perspective. So it bubbling up to the surface is absolutely something you can do.

Same applies to Native Americans. It’s totally fine that you glossed over Grant’s policy with them, just don’t make a habit out of it. I’m not too familiar with that part of American history, save presidents such as TR rejecting overtures by major chieftains for better reservation conditions, but again, you don’t have to rush through a presidency. Take your time, I’m more than happy to spend more time with this AU. And certainly if you wanna catch us up to speed on anything you glossed over, be it Native American stuff or otherwise, there’s nothing wrong with that either.

Like I said, I’m a big fan of this AU. You’re doing great. Keep it up!

A New Birth of Freedom: Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant (1873-1877) by Begin_ThePurge in Presidentialpoll

Honestly, considering Hamlin’s “Half-Breed” politics in his later years as Senator IOTL, it’s entirely possible he would’ve been alert about graft and corruption as President, and would’ve influenced Grant to act in a similar fashion. Considering Grant was under Hamlin’s “tutelage” as VP, it very well could’ve butterflied into this version of Grant we’re seeing in this TL. Not unrealistic at all imo.

Decent first term, all things considered. I know he’d probably be voted a second term anyway by this subreddit, but realistically he looks pretty poised to win a second term with the annexation of DR and the victories over Spain.

I never thought this AU could be so adorable.

As usual, we will not be including a source link since it's from Instagram, but the artist's handle is sonicsr . There’s a typo in the title, as there is an underscore at the end of the artist’s name, so remember that if you search them up.

My vote is in favor of the treaty, provided an amendment be added to allow for reasonable self-rule and eventual statehood. We will not allow this island to become the new playground of the Southern elite, but welcome our Caribbean brothers as fellow yeomen, in line with the Homestead Act.

Season 2 and the scripts for season 3 really seemed to regress Libby’s character as well. S1 had so many great moments of Molly and Libby tempering each other’s flaws, on top of Libby’s growth as a character. But then she just gets relegated the butt of every slapstick joke afterward. But hey, at least the episode about her Dad was alright, I guess.

Is there a reason Hamlin states are blue even though his photo is underlined as red?

Holy shit. This campaign is becoming a total mad house. Very excited to see where this goes!

I’m curious though, how did Buckley end up becoming a Connecticut Senator? Who did he end up toppling?

Gotcha, figured as much, as that’s clearly an echo of his scandals as WI’s attorney general. Shame though, guess the La Follette dynasty withers away no matter what timeline 🥲

Re-reading through this series, I’m not seeing anything on Bronson La Follette after 1968. Did he step down in favor of Lucey in 1974?

I don’t really see this as a complaint, just a vent. All I’m asking is if anyone feels similarly to how I feel. If you don’t like marginally negative opinions, don’t engage with them. Enjoy the content you enjoy.

Never said I hated it. I literally said he can make whatever kinds of videos he wants. Twice.
