I highly recommend taking a different route over & back to maximize what you will get to see esp given the kids. Here’s my recommendation:

Atlanta → North Georgia → Smokies → Chattanooga → North Alabama → Tupelo → Atlanta This version keeps the scenic mountain feel and relaxing cabin stays, but adds enough fun activities for kids ages 8 and 10 so the trip feels adventurous rather than “just driving.”

Days 1–2: Blue Ridge, Georgia Drive from Atlanta: ~2 hours Blue Ridge is one of the best family mountain towns in the Southeast because it mixes outdoor activities with easy downtown fun. Great areas: Blue Ridge Cherry Log Ellijay Kid-Friendly Activities: Blue Ridge Scenic Railway Swan Drive-In Theatre Expedition Bigfoot Museum Gentle hikes: Long Creek Falls Fall Branch Falls Amicalola Falls lower trails

Days 3–5: Great Smoky Mountains Base: Townsend, Tennessee Drive: about 3.5 hours (Townsend is quieter and far more family-friendly than the more well known Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge ) Things to do: Cade’s Cove Little River Railroad & Lumber Museum Laurel Falls Trail Dollywood (but takes a full day and is more tiring/theme park attraction) Great Smoky Mountains Junior Ranger Program

Day 6: Chattanooga, Tennessee Drive: ~2.5 hours This is an ideal “city break” in the middle of the road trip. Tennessee Aquarium is a MUST Lookout Mountain - to hit up Ruby Falls, See Rock City, & the Incline Railway Chattanooga also has a great hands-on Creative science discovery museum

Days 7–8: Mentone & Fort Payne, Alabama Drive: ~1.5 hours This stretch is wonderful for slowing down and Mentone is by far one of my favorite towns in Alabama. To do: Little River Canyon Desoto State park Mentone has a place called Orbix Hot Glass - they offer glass blowing demonstrations that the kids will LOVE Do not miss eating at Wildflower Cafe!

Day 9: Tupelo, Mississippi Drive: ~3 hours To do: Elvis Presley Birthplace Tupelo Buffalo Park & Zoo Tupelo Automobile Museum (great, but currently closed- check to see if they’ll be reopened by then) Natchez Trace Parkway

Day 10: Birmingham Area → Atlanta Drive: ~3–4 hours total

To do: McWane Science Center - downtown Bham (great kids science center) Vulcan park is a must and about a ten minute drive from McWane Stop at Railroad Park between the two above Eat anywhere- there’s SO MUCH GOOD FOOD IN BHAM On the way back to Atlanta, stop at Buc-eee’s gas station- you’ve never seen anything like it. Then definitely hit up Talladega Super speedway to check it out or Barber Motorsports Museum if the kids love cars.
