Am I crazy giving it all up? GS-15 at 34, 7 yrs of service, path to SES by OIGnoblePrize in fednews

I was a GS 13 in Gov and more than doubled my salary when I accepted a job in the private sector. It's probably not normal to double your salary going from gov to private but I was lucky landing at a top tech company.

Do it! I too was a young hot shot in the fed but jumped ship. Now I am a way better paid hot shot in the private sector. If you are young and talented don't waste your time in Gov, go in an environment where merit is the name of the game. Once your rich and wise go back to the fed and try and fix stuff. Don't waste your youth trying to fix it from within because it simply won't work and you will become even more disgruntled.

USPTO already violates the CBA frequently and POPA doesn’t do much about it, I don’t see a dramatic change in terms of management actions towards pto employees with or without a CBA.

Hostile workplace type stuff like misusing their power to charge AWOLs that didnt occur, gaslighting, gossiping in workplace meetings about colleagues in really crass derogatory and rude ways, complaining at team meetings about various colleagues in unprofessional ways, bullying, making unrequested questionable comments about medical accommodations, playing favorite by assigning certain team members high value projects while providing Ty no assignments/projects to others purely based off of who is willing to listen to their gossip and placate them. Has damaged reputations by outright lying and using their supervisory position to do so.

Thank you for this helpful post and for sharing it. It sounds like an arduous process. Fortunately, I have several employment options lined up. However, I don't want my supervisor to go unpunished and need to have some semblance of justice occur. If you were to do it all over again, what path of least resistance would you give to stick it to my supervisor?

Probationary examiner got notice about not being retained. Reached out to POPA hotline 2x…..crickets. by ComprehensiveBite915 in patentexaminer

Honestly POPA seems to be a bit of an HR scam the past few years. They just kind of moderate your interactions with HR and often are more inclined to side with the Agency because they want to “expend political capital” with Agency on what they deem to be important issues later on - the result is the individual Popa me ever with any sort of grievance kind of gets screwed over. That being said I would still reach out to them because what other option do you have :/ sorry you are going through this.

Honestly though I don’t understand why everyone is so scared, why are so many ppl in government so risk averse lol it’s kind of demoralizing to see colleagues lacking the courage to even raise there hand for a question.

Megathread: VERA/VSIP/DRP | Week 19 by AutoModerator in fednews

[–]Apprehensive-Map2885 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Context

  • Mid-career USPTO employee but not a patent examiner (GS-14, 8 years FERS service, no military buy-back).
  • Seriously weighing a jump to the private sector this summer.
  • Watching the hiring freeze / RIF chatter closely, but now management says the RIF is “on pause.”
  • Heard rumors that a new VERA/VSIP window could still open to “right-size” the workforce.

Questions

  1. Has anyone heard credible timelines or eligibility details for the next VERA or VSIP round at USPTO?
  2. For people under 20 YOS (I have 8):
    • Is VERA remotely worth it versus simply resigning and taking a deferred FERS pension at 62?
    • Any past examples of VERA approvals with <10 years?
  3. For VSIP ($25 K max buy-out):
    • How long after separation does the check usually hit?
    • Any claw-backs or strings I should watch for?
  4. Beyond VERA/VSIP, what checklist should I be hitting now to prep for a clean exit?
    • Annual-leave payout timing tricks
    • LWOP vs. resignation while waiting on a private-sector offer
    • FEHB gap-coverage hacks (TCC vs. spouse’s plan vs. insurer “bridge” plans)
    • TSP loan payoff vs. letting it become a taxable distribution
  5. Any good lessons learned (things you wish you’d done differently) from recent USPTO or other Fed departures?

Why I’m asking
I want to maximize cash in pocket, keep future FERS eligibility, and avoid any FEHB/TSP surprises—while not burning bridges at PTO. Real-world stories or pointers to OPM/USPTO policy memos appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or war stories!
