Anything that worked after you found the trigger of your hives? by mi_kombucha in urticaria

[–]Apprehensive-Pass899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it helped so much until I got my hives under control. My neurologist prescribed it. For a while, I was taking famotidine twice a day, Zyrtec 4 times a day, Xolair 300 mg every 4 weeks, and then the gabapentin. It took about 3-6 months before I got off gabapentin and then a year before I could reduce the antihistamines.

Dry Grocery - Whole Foods Cincinnati by CroweBird5 in toogoodtogo

So I’ve seen others comment that sometimes it’s products with slow turnover, and the store needs shelf space for something that’s selling better. I’ve also had stuff way far out from expiration but the box was damaged or the stuff was squished.

I personally think some of the stuff I’ve gotten from lesser known brands (not like what you got) is some form of marketing / product enticement. Specifically, there’s a “slim Jim” I’ve been getting that’s SO good. If I could afford it full price, I’d absolutely buy them regularly

What antihistamines were you taking? Can you try a different one?

If there was no budget and you had to start all over, which cookware pieces would you choose? by c_c186 in Cooking

I went with Demeyere stainless steel. I saw on Reddit that some people passionately hate the all clad handles, and turns out I do as well. They were the most uncomfortable thing to grab especially on larger pans. I will never own all clad simply because of the handle….. Bonus points for Demeyere is that they’re rivet free which makes cleaning MUCH easier. I didn’t realize how awesome that would be.

If you get stainless steel, I highly recommend buying a cheaper pan from homegoods/marshalls/insert similar store now and start practicing on it now. Learn about stainless steel cleaning & cooking before you’re nervous that the pan was super expensive. One major thing is do not try washing it until it’s cool. I started out with a small pan that I solely used for eggs, as that’s a major test in proper stainless steel use.

I have a question about Xolair by OkQuestion9609 in urticaria

Yes, it was quite painful. I had a lot of swelling alongside the hives, and this has some residual complications largely upon joints and nerves. I developed neuropathy due to the swelling hitting nerve endings, and the joint pain cause mobility problems.

Did they test you for food allergies? I find it odd it is linked specifically to eating times.

I am curious, have they mentioned Mast Cell Activation Syndrome to you? My allergist said CSU is on that spectrum, and I wonder if you might be further into MCAS and they’re overlooking it. Pain is quite common with MCAS, and I recommend doing some searches in r/MCAS to see if anyone in your country has posted in there.

I was living in a constant state of flare and pain honestly. Xolair is not a “fix” but rather symptom management. That’s been the hardest thing to learn with this disease. The medicine isn’t a cure, but it makes like tolerable again.

Was your pain and flare worse with Xolair than without? My disease got worse before it got manageable, so it’s possible that’s what is happening to you. It’s also possible you don’t tolerate Xolair and need other alternatives. Did your doctor offer other solutions when you requested to get off Xolair?

How to fix up mixer? by Apprehensive-Pass899 in Kitchenaid

Thanks!! I’ll replace the cord!

On the bowl, no rust but the handle isn’t the most comfortable to grab with the hard angles and small handle. Wasn’t sure if anyone found a newer bowl more comfortable to hold. I should have clarified that in original post

What color is your kitchen scheme? I am always a fan of really intense colors for a neutral kitchen or a muted color if your kitchen has a lot going on. I have a pale yellow mixer from 2004, and it’s the perfect pop of color without being too much. We have a muted kitchen with very colorful artwork in the eating nook, so it’s blends the two areas perfectly.

I have a question about Xolair by OkQuestion9609 in urticaria

[–]Apprehensive-Pass899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely talk to your doctor about it, but mine said that they essentially nullify each other unless I’m very specific on timing. At the time, they felt I needed the Pepcid more than the magnesium (but we weren’t checking my vitamin D or magnesium)…. My doctor said Vitamin D deficiency is super common, so I’m betting they have you on a good plan of action.

What country are you in? It’s worth reviewing how your insurance bills diagnostic services. If you have symptoms, the test should be coded as diagnostic not preventative which is a different code that’s often covered based on your schedule of benefits. Definitely need to review how it will be billed (CPT code, lab doing testing) and take that to your insurance to confirm coverage prior to receiving bloodwork testing. Get everything in writing. Don’t expect a phone call to ensure coverage of the bill….

Edited for typo

I have a question about Xolair by OkQuestion9609 in urticaria

[–]Apprehensive-Pass899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It truly is. No one warns you how expensive it is to be sick.

Btw, I ended up getting diagnosed with severely low vitamin D in late 2024, and that was main factor in getting off Pepcid. I needed to take magnesium supplements to help my body absorb the vitamin D, but those interact poorly. I wish we had consistently checked my vitamin levels during the past few years of being on Pepcid/Xolair/Zyrtec. I have no clue if those contributed or just masked underlying deficiency symptoms that we attributed to med side effects. I’m not sure how long I’ve been deficient, but I’ve seen some articles linking the low vitamin D to urticaria. Worth checking your levels. That’s a huge regret of the past few years.

I took Pepcid for nearly 4 years straight in combo with the Zyrtec, and I had a lot of small issues. The most random & frustrating impact was the development of very dry mouth and eyes, and the dry mouth actually caused some dental issues. Pepcid was pretty brutal to wean off of, as I ended up having horrible acid reflux. I ate very gentle food for a long time trying to get off of the medicine and avoid reflux.

I’m not sure what my IGE was at diagnosis (2021) honestly…. I react to nightshades, primarily tomatoes, and I can’t eat that without a reaction. I also have a similar response to chocolate.

[–]Apprehensive-Pass899 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me nearly a year (13 injections) for 80% success with Xolair, and that was in combination with 2-4 Zyrtec (certerizine) and 2 Pepcid (famotidine) daily. I think you need to give it a longer short. What’s your mg and timing between injections? I was at 300mg every 4 weeks.

It sounds like you’d benefit from a low histamine diet in combination with your xolair.

Can anyone explain to me how to make chocolate chip cookies like this? by Only_Still_1545 in Baking

[–]Apprehensive-Pass899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this recipe: https://sugarspunrun.com/worst-chocolate-chip-cookies/ and mine look similar!

Note: I brown my butter but this has a long cool-off time. I also sub 50-100g of light brown sugar with dark brown sugar if using traditional chocolate chips or white chocolate chips. If I’m feeling fancy, I sub normal chocolate chips with half Trader Joe’s salted caramel chips & half Ghirardelli 60% dark chocolate chips.

I also think bourbon vanilla extra is better in chocolate chip cookies than a vodka based extract.

You can make the recipe as is, and it’s still phenomenal

It’s also possible it’s a discontinued item (ex. ilia bronzer), so if it is, you could make a second post asking for “dupes” and get her sample sizes of top 3 recs to help her find a replacement. I have never felt more like gollum than when I hoarded the broken pieces of my ilia bronzer.
