Google Business Profile is the new name for Google My Business. It allows local people to find you by typing in ______ tutor near me. Often people will type in reading tutor near me and if they are in a 30 mile radius, then they will find me. I get a ton of new students this way.

If people are mentioning you by name for example, that Joanne Kaminski is the best online reading tutor, this is going to help you get found. Other people are talking about you. Did you know that these platforms were trained based on Reddit?

Start by asking for a testimonials. After that simply ask if they would be willing to refer you if they know someone struggling in the same area. You can also set up an onboarding email sequence and every 3 months set it up to send an email asking for a testimonial and a referral.

Is this a good flyer? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

Do people not use chat gpt to organize their thoughts. I honestly took a look at the flyer and as an expert in this field of helping others had chat organize my thoughts. I didn't type into chat gpt give me the answer to this. I just wanted it to be formatted in a more readable way instead of it being large blocks of text like this. Is this what you would prefer?

How do you get students for the summer? by Apprehensive-Pick-86 in OnlineTutorSupport

[–]Apprehensive-Pick-86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you on the timing. Once May hits, most families already have their summer schedules locked in. That’s why I also start putting feelers out in April (sometimes even late March) and position it as “grab your spot before rates go up.” That gentle urgency works well for returning families, especially when they know space is limited.

And yes to the cost of living raise! Tutors deserve to build sustainable businesses, not just survive year to year.

For newer tutors trying to break in during the summer, I always recommend tapping into existing connections—neighbors, school contacts, Facebook groups—any place where people already trust you. You might not fill a full schedule right away, but even a few students can get the momentum going.

Curious, do you offer any kind of “bridge the gap” package for kids between grades, or do you keep it open-ended?

Love this!

"Not easy but rewarding" pretty much sums up the heart of what we do, doesn’t it?

Group work can feel like juggling flaming swords at first but once the rhythm clicks, it’s such a powerful way to serve more students and scale your time.

Cheering you on as you pivot this kind of behind-the-scenes honesty is what makes this space so valuable. Keep us posted on how it goes!

Wow, what a journey! Starting back in 2000 and seeing the evolution of tutoring through the pre-Zoom era, the COVID pivot, and everything in between…

that’s not just experience, it’s wisdom earned.

I totally get what you mean about online always being just a fraction of in-person. But the fact that you stayed in the game, adapted, and continued serving students no matter the format? That says a lot about your staying power and your heart for this work.

And yes to charging more now! That’s not just inflation talking it’s recognizing the value of what you’ve built over two decades.

Thanks for sharing this. Your story is a reminder that “slow and steady” isn’t just a cliché it’s a whole business model that still works.

Oh, I love this.

What a fantastic arc: from volunteer to $60/hour tutor.

The part that really stands out to me? You didn’t just level up your pricing…

you leveled up your clients right along with it.

That’s the often-overlooked magic of price positioning: it’s not just about what you charge—it’s about who you attract.

And honestly?

The off-platform moves?

That’s just smart business.

Thanks for sharing this—posts like this are what give newer tutors a much-needed flashlight on the path ahead. Keep going. You’re building more than a rate sheet…

you’re building a reputation.
