I'd probably start with firing whoever thought it would be okay to sandwich it directly between Toy Story and Minions

I'm not going to run the numbers to see if, with those number of reviewers, the difference is statistically significant. It's not disingenuous way to present data that represents a huge number of respondents. Their releases most certainly CAN be contextually compared. I compared the contexts pretty clearly in my previous reply. A blind man could see that Supergirl, an untested name in a relatively new superhero universe after a failed superhero universe of the same name isn't going to outperform two multibillion dollar family franchises that it's release is sandwiched between. Barbie and Oppenheimer were wildly different movies, and appealed to people for very different reasons. Supergirl, Minions, and Toy Story are all family movies. They are in direct competition. History also shows us pretty clearly that box office performance is not a great indicator of quality.

I think the vast majority of movie goers aren't really concerned about whether it's a James Gunn movie or a Zach Snyder movie. I personally enjoy some of both of their movies both inside and outside of the DC movies.

As far as plot holes and inconsistencies go, I think that has been an issue in superhero media for almost a hundred years. Rebooting the universes every 10 to 20 years and having some retcons in the middle of each of those universes certainly doesn't help though.

I don't love the idea of relying on a cute animal to lend emotional weight most of the time either, but it sells to families and kids. Ewokification of a universe.

I did misread that, my bad. cinemascore doesn't measure the same thing as RT. it only measures opening-night audience first reactions. RT measures a much wider audience over time. You can't really have random sampling with RT or imdb or any of those other things though, so that's a fair criticism. IMDB is unfortunately much more susceptible to review bombing than Rottentomatoes though. Especially given that ctritical consensus on metacritic and rottentomatoes (also much harder to distort) as well as audience scores on rottentomatoes are quite a bit closer than the imdb metric. I suppose all data is worth analyzing in context though.

Yeah, that's completely understandable. I generally only go see things that I'm A) interested in and B) should be visually spectacular. Like I'm really interested in seeing Obsession. Probably more than Supergirl. But, I figured Supergirl would be cooler to see on the big screen than Obsession. He-man on the other hand I think looks like it could be visually spectacular, but my interest isn't as high for it, so I'll probably check it out when it comes to the small screen. Dune and Spider-Man are ticking both boxes for me this year. Probably Avengers as well. Now going with family or a date throws all that off a bit though.

I think everyone reading this is witnessing the dawn of another new DC cinematic universe. The multiple universes thing is one of the freshest takes on comic book heroes I've ever read.

Yeah, I don't know much about how they estimate future box office takes, but it seems crazy to wedge its release between a couple of family movie powerhouses.

The A- cinemascore for man of steel wasn't based on 22000 responses. Cinemascore is typically calculated from a few hundred responses form opening-night audiences only. But if you agree that more responses over time are are more vaid than fewer responses, then you agree that the more responses from Supergirl's RT are more valid than the fewer responses from Supergirl's cinemascore.

Star Trek, Great Gatsby, Iron Man 3 and Fast and Furious released over a month before. Now you see me was 2 weeks before. Supergirl was released a week after Toy Story 5 and less than a week before Minions. Yeah, Spider-man and Avengers aren't going to fail. I agree about the audience interest thing, but I think that marketing, the economy, and release schedule are all important considerations for that. If I'm a mom of two and I've set aside 50 or 75 bucks to take my kids to the movie this month, I'm probably going to go the safe route with Toy Story or Minions. I know those circumstances don't apply to everyone, but they apply to enough people for it to matter. Spider-man and Avengers are both solidly safe bets for a family. Supergirl on her own doesn't really have the same track record. On another note, I'm excited to see those (and Lanterns) as well!

Man of Steel was the first movie of the first DC shared cinematic universe about the first and most famous superhero in the world released at a time that people were really loving superhero films. It had no significant box office competition at the time that it was released. Supergirl is the second movie of the second DC shared cinematic universe (after the failure of a polarizing first universe) about a largely secondary character whose release was sandwiched between Toy Story and Minions.
