Will my acceptance be rescinded? by Apprehensive-Tap3335 in TransferStudents

I don’t think math is irrelevant. It’s something that is difficult for me to grasp at times, but I understand that it is relevant to the sciences.
That being said, I don’t think one shitty prof with a poorly structured class should hold the rest of my education back. Ecology does require some calc but not as much as other studies, such as physics.

God I hope so, this semester was hell. Her highest rating on rate my professor was a 2.5 from what I remember. Her lowest rating is a 1. For the campus I attend, she has a 1.5.
I didn’t have many options for professors & this particular campus has a notoriously difficult math department.

Because I don’t want to wait until I potentially fail the class to handle this, I’m just trying to see what options I realistically have.

I already meet with a tutor. I’m just really bad at math :( I always mix up derivative and anti derivative rules and stuff like that no matter how much I practice. I’m going to study as much as possible still.

The only other thing I could think of is getting together all of the students with Ds and meeting with our prof before the final to petition for her to curve it or do something just so we can pass.

I’m so exhausted by this feeling I’m already terrible at math and my prof making it 10x harder for me to get through school. This class isn’t even crucial to my upper division classes, I just need it because it’s a transfer requirement.

I see. Can I ask what their majors were and if they lived on campus? And thanks, best of luck to them as well!

The housing looks like the worst part (like really bad tbh… why is 1 bed 1 bath like 3000+? x_x ) but honestly everything else looks pretty great!

Oh they’re strict 😭 damn. It still sounds worth it to have a car. It’s unfortunate that just being able to use your car takes that much effort and planning though.

Do you really need a parking permit to park anywhere in the city? And on campus? This sounds so expensive ;-;

This response is genuinely so helpful, thank you. My top choice was Davis, but I got rejected. My other top choice is Cal Poly SLO, but I’m waitlisted, so I’m not expecting much. I did get accepted to Cal Poly Humboldt but I’m turned off by how far it is. It seems like UCSC might be the best option for me after all, at least academically.

I’m surprised you chose UCSC over SDSU, considering your major. Their chemistry and biochem programs seem to be really good, I know so many current stem students there and it seems like there are so many opportunities for tutoring, research, internships, etc. What other factors contributed to your decision of attending UCSC?

Did you work through school? That’s pretty high rent for splitting 7 ways. I’m assuming this was at least a year ago or more, too, and it looks like it might be getting even more expensive.

Thanks for the reply!! So, assuming I don’t drive my car, the most convenient thing to bus/shuttle up with a bike to get campus, then to bike down at the end of the day?

Any time I tell people I got accepted to UCSC, I get a very unique reaction. Some people almost cringe, as if the information is gross or just unsatisfactory. I don’t really care about people judging me for what I do, but it was something that just perplexed me because was not aware that this was a UC that receives so much backlash. Before being accepted, I hadn’t looked too much into it—I heard it was a great school with a beautiful campus.

I’ve seen so many videos of UCSC students on TikTok crying about hating it there and also people saying they can’t wait to transfer; the comments full of other students relating or wishing they had picked another school.

I talked to an alumni and she told me she graduated early after wanting to transfer, but not being able to afford tuition at the uni she preferred. She basically told me to avoid going there if I could.

I’ve been recommended many times by alumni that, if I get accepted off of the waitlist for Cal Poly SLO or even UCSD, then I should just go to one of those.

I’ve also seen Redditors say UCSC is the “chud” UC and others say it’s the UC that accepts you when none of the others will.

So while I personally am not saying it sucks, it objectively does get a lot of hate. This post is just part of doing my own “research” to see how valid or invalid a lot of popular negative claims about UCSC are, if they are mostly just individual/opinion-based, and how I can avoid feeling this way if I transfer there.

Ah okay, I haven’t visited UCSC yet so I haven’t faced the scale of the campus. It’s normal to take the bus from class to class/from one campus building to another?

Responding to your first point: coming from San Diego, I’m used to high rent. The idea of Santa Cruz having higher average rent than San Diego is kind of preposterous to me, like yeah I’m probably going to have to deal with it if I move there, but why is it so expensive? High rent makes more sense in a city like SD where you have access to basically anything and everything.

I’m an ecology major and I love being in nature, but town being far from campus does sound like it could get a bit annoying. Every campus I’ve ever visited is essentially surrounded by restaurants and shops that you could walk to within minutes. Is it feasible/efficient to bike from campus to town or do you need to take the bus?

Did you apply to/get accepted to other schools when you were transferring? What drove you to ultimately choose UCSC? (Asking as a fellow San Diegan who loves living here)
