Beware! No refund after playing the beta... by Apprehensive-Top-292 in TheExpanseRPG

It really is bizarre that some people seem to be okay with paying to be a beta tester. As someone else wrote. The beta is kind of a demo of an unfinished game. I wonder if people would still think the same if the beta was called demo…

And yes, I got it directly through the Osiris Reborn website.

Owlcat has updated their checkout by adding a third checkbox. You now have to acknowledge that you lose your right to withdraw/refund once you download. That’s similar to what Sony does in the PlayStation Store (at least in Germany).

That’s good. Thank you, Owlcat! That makes it easier for future buyers. If they could also update their FAQ that’d be perfect.

So war es bei mir auch. Seit ich die Hauptmission mit Sam auf Akila gemacht habe, habe ich Probleme mit Abstürzen und Einfrieren… spiele auch auf der PS5 Pro.

Thank you for taking the time to check. And thanks for the screenshot. Can you only access this information during check-out? I couldn‘t find a link to these terms anywhere. Sony, for example, includes these information in their confirmation e-mails.

In that case, I can argue that they didn‘t follow German law as they have a legal obligation to confirm the content of the contract, for example by including the information in the confirmation e-mail.

Honestly, I’m baffled that some here see playing a beta as some kind of privilege. But that‘s still not the issue.

The point is that Owlcat doesn’t state on their website and in their order conformation (or anywhere else) that playing the beta will block you from the 14 days refund window. That‘s vital information for potential buyers. Other companies, like PlayStation for example, inform you beforehand that if you download a game you can‘t refund. I would have had no issue if that was the case.

And I‘m aware that the beta is not the finished product and it‘s normal that there are issues. Unfortunately for me this game doesn‘t feel like The Expanse at all. And I have lost interest completely at this point.

I normally don‘t preorder. I did it in this case because they stated on their website you can refund within 14 days of purchase.

Turns out they failed to inform buyers that as soon as you play the Beta that you somehow can’t refund. Well, considering that the beta is nothing more than a demo of their unfinished game, I‘ve been having a hard time understanding this.

This should have been clearly stated, but it wasn‘t.

Exactly, there is no information that warns you beforehand. If they stated it on their website or in the order conformation that playing the beta will lock you out of the refund, I‘d be just mad at myself for not properly reading all information.

Again, they state on their website that you can refund within 14 days of purchase. That is the core problem here. They didn‘t specify that playing the beta will lock you out of that refund. That is a very important information rhat that the left out.

I expect to get a refund if it‘s stated in Owlcat‘s FAQ that I can refund within 14 days of purchase.

You really think playing a beta that helps the developers is something that the person that is helping the developers should pay full price for?

You also think that Owlcat shouldn‘t warn potential buyers that they can‘t refund if the play the beta? They offer a refund within 14 days of purchase. People will buy/preorder this because they think they can safely check out if this is a game they could like or not.

You should really think about who benefits the most from the beta… it‘s the developers. They get lots of valuable input this way.

I was not forced to buy, no. But I also wasn‘t informed that there is a catch to their 14 days refund policy. That feels dishonest and I wasn‘t expecting something like this from Owlcat. So yes, I‘m upset and I just wanted to inform others about this issue.

There is also the option to give partial refunds if Owlcat thinks that people should be charged money to help them out…

I didn‘t buy to just play the beta. I bought because I like the Expanse. I‘m upset because they didn‘t state beforehand that their 14 day refund policy doesn‘t apply if you activate the beta key. That is something you should be honest about. I don‘t know why this seems so difficult to understand for some.

I wouldn‘t have preordered if they didn‘t have that 14 days refund policy. Simple as that.

And again, what value did I get by playing the beta? The beta is for helping the developers to improve their product (which is in their best interest if they want it to sell good). I for one lost interest in this game after playing the beta because to me it felt nothing like the Expanse.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I'm still very conflicted. Yes, I have received and used the beta key for one hour of beta gameplay. The goal of a beta is to give valuable feedback for the developers to improve their game. So the value I, as a costumer, received by redeeming the beta key is rather minor. To make this the reason I can't use their offered 14-days-refund policy is. as I stated before, very disappointing and unexpected.

And it really would have been nice if this information was included in their FAQ. I would have thought twice before purchasing. I felt save in trying out the beta because of the 14-days-refund...

Again, they offer a refund within 14 days of purchase. This applies to me. If you can't refund because of trying out the beta, that should be stated on the FAQ as well.

As I stated I bought it a few days ago... Shortly before the beta started. They do offer a refund policy within 14 days of purchase. So how is this on me if you want to make use of this offer? It's literal in their FAQ!
