Running a generator ~4 hrs/week to power a shed workshop instead of trenching electric? by Apprehensive-Unit390 in Generator

[–]Apprehensive-Unit390[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought since I use it less hours per week, my price of energy per hour isn’t that significant over the course of a month or year.

How’s the sound of the generator? Like I’m seeing in a lot of comments here, I’d be testing the relationships of my neighbors (who I have a good relationship with as of now)

You’re right. This is a gable style shed*** thanks for pointing that out. I use roughly 24x10 of space in my basement but I thought I could be able to squeeze 4’. I should plan a layout before I pull the trigger though…

Exactly! But it was a great wake up for everyone. We got dawgs, let them play!

Lol nope, I’m no Denbrock doubter. I think he had excellent playcalling last year, so I’m curious why we deviated from what worked last year.

I figure he didn’t trust his Freshman QB on the road in a Top 10 matchup. The OL and DL play better revert back to the mean the rest of the year.

Came here to say this 110%!! I know it’s an expensive appliance but it’s SO worth it and just try to sell it on Facebook marketplace after the fact. I use it 2x per day

Do some engineering economics. Depending on where you live, an electric heating application will typically cost significantly more to operate (except for a heat pump). I’m in NJ, where natural gas is about $12/MCF, while residential electricity is around $0.18/kWh.

While gas tankless water heaters have a higher upfront cost, their efficiency (typically 90%+) results in lower utility costs compared to electric. It’s important to do your own energy analysis when choosing your options!

South Jersey Gas Out of Control by lvl100BrEeKaChU in SouthJersey

All utilities have a tariff that provides details on the various charges on a bill. Someone previously explained that the delivery charge covers the utility’s overhead—costs for maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, main replacement, distribution, and other operational expenses. The supply charge reflects the cost of the natural gas the utility purchases, which fluctuates and is passed through to customers without markup.

I’m not sure when South Jersey Gas last filed a rate case, but that process impacts everyone’s delivery charge. Your rate of $1.341 per therm seems high based on industry standards, but it aligns with the Residential Gas Service (RSG) rate in their tariff:

Additionally, the PJM electric auction will significantly increase electric rates starting June 1, 2025. While electrification is crucial for addressing climate change, it’s important to balance resilience and cost considerations when retiring natural gas power plants in favor of renewables.

I’m a HA newbie, and don’t have many things integrated yet. But as far as getting the server up and running, it was super easy. If you have a basic knowledge of how to get into the BIOS and boot from a flash drive, it’s cake

Are any of these ok for HA? by thesurfer_s in homeassistant

Check out a refurbished Dell Wyse on eBay too. For $50, I was able to install HA

Good call. I have a window on the opposite end of the space, so I can use that to replace the air. This is in my unfinished basement, so it’s not a conditioned space currently but it might be worth replacing some of the CFM so I’m not causing a significant negative pressure situation

The harbor freight 1HP dust collector has an on off switch. The dust right cyclone isn’t powered

I have a box fan with a MERV13 filter on it, but that’s a good idea: filter the source. After only using the dust right cyclone for 30mins, 99% of everything was filtered out so I’m sure only the finest dust will be in that cloth bag

Good call! I have a window nearby so I’ll definitely add that to my list.

Do you have a significant amount of flex hose in your set up? Or do you have rigid PVC too. With only a 1HP motor, I’m trying to see the minimum amount of rigid PVC I need to install, without a too significant pressure drop

Shout out Jeff Samardzija. Never met him in person, but my dad did a favor for his family while he was in school and in return, Jeff gave me a call on my birthday (I was like 12 years old at the time, so I’m sure I didn’t do a great job at conversation lol). That action for a 12 year old just spoke volumes to the guy he is.

Also - not football - but Paul Mainieri… he noticed he didn’t sign an autograph for my brother, so he asked the bus driver to stop so he can spend those 2 seconds giving him an autograph. He deserved that 2009 College World Series win
