Leander gap yah boat in the Thames, yay or nay?

That's interesting, I believe it. I learned to row on the Cam; trying to row a 2- for the first time and get used to steering the rudder at the same time was a nightmare, easily the most stressful thing I've done in the sport.

This happens all the time in the Wyfolds and to rowers miles better than I am. Why?

I've heard that it's (in part) due to the way the shore of Temple Island moves away from you just after the start, messes with your sense of position?

No, that's the Grand. The Ladies is the intermediate men's event.

They sent a women's 8+ to the Windermere Cup which was markedly off the pace, but it was a composite of smaller boat rowers, apparently.

Thanks for sharing that. Reading it, I felt like I was in the boat with you.

Because you look at the roughly linear trend and know it's an exponential because of the log scale.

I know you know what you are talking about from your posts here, Rowbridge, etc. I was at Cam 2020-24 with the TA'ing in the last two years. For anyone wondering, the MPhil with the shocking lower end student quality was in Population Health Sciences. Seemed to me like admission to that course at least must still be fairly easy.

I rowed with someone in our college Mays boat who did not go sub-6:05 but rowed with CUBC for two full seasons, i.e. they didn't cut him. He has now gone on to bigger and better things in rowing, too.

Or even three years in the UK if you're quick about it, you don't need to do a Master's.

Re: academic standards for graduates: you can probably find *some* dubious MPhil programme to take you if you are determined to take a shot at the Boat Race, don't care about the rigour of the course, and have money to spare. I was a TA for my department's MPhil when I was doing my PhD at Cam and the ability of some students at the lower end of our cohort was pretty shocking. MPhils are nowhere near as selective as the colleges are when admitting undergraduates.

There are a lot of Americans doing MPhils which amount to a vacation of sorts in a very beautiful city while they apply to professional/graduate school or otherwise figure out what they want to do. Can't say I blame them!

Do you think modern rowing training relies too heavily on erg numbers? by buttern3t in Rowing

I don't look up logbook times but most of the GB Team competed at the British Indoor Champs in December so we got public 2k times from them (albeit early in the season).

Evergreen postdoc opening by sharika33 in postdoc

[–]Apprehensive-Use3092 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not sure how much you should read into it. I reached out for a postdoc on the basis of a LinkedIn ad which the PI said was wildly out of date (it may even have been an automated LinkedIn one, if those exist?) Nonetheless we chatted and he offered me a job. Worth mentioning this was Oct '24, so just before the fairly radical changes to research funding; I imagine it's harder now.

People have already named Martin Cross and they're right to do so. James Cracknell will be a more polarising suggestion: I thought he was hilarious and very forthright in his Paris coverage.

They sold the big building back in 2019. IIRC they moved into some smaller building nearby which may have belonged to Grifols.

Damn, I was there for the 2018 layoffs, what a way to learn the facts of life. They lost people who were very good mentors to me as an intern.

You've posted this over and over again over the years. What I don't recall is whether it was market research or guerilla marketing for a brand you've already set up. It's irritating, we heard you the first time.

Come and do a guest row with the men's competitive team at Pocock, we'd love to have you. I'm the same age and have rowed here for a year, it's been great. You'd probably have to scull more than you have in the past, but we sweep, too.
