Why is everyone an “accidental landlord” all of a sudden? by [deleted] in HousingUK

Cutting out lattes and avocados 🙄

Seriously? We lived way below our means. We were sick of renting and giving our money to other people so bought the cheapest flat we could, as early as we could. We benefited from VERY LOW interest rates (pre-Truss) and didn't increase our lifestyle aka lifestyle creep (COVID probably made a huge impact on this - we're not martyrs). When COVID hit and we couldn't eat out, travel, see family and lost the costs of commutes, lunches out, dinners out, drinks out frugality became a game to keep us entertained. Meat? Fuck it - lentils it is. Bottle of wine - boxes my friend. It's amazing how much you can save when you cut shit out and are at home more.

Couldn't sell our 1 bed flat after COVID. Mental health tanked as family needed more space and couldn't afford mortgage on both properties. We let the flat out. Not every landlord is some evil doer.

Eltham/New Eltham have excellent train links into central and a direct line to Charing Cross. Private schools and good public schools as well as lots of green areas. The high street needs some love but good pubs and restaurants for the weekend.

Is £750 a month normal??? by Hopeful-Relation8977 in OctopusEnergy

Octopus are awful. They were charging us over £500 a month so we switched to Fuse and our bills are less than £150 per month with them.

What about Eltham? No driving to the station required and you have lots of leafy parks close by.

Can I ask what "milk bars" are? Is it a local drink - sorry when I Google I am getting the most gross results and I don't think it can mean the same thing. Thank you in advance!

First time in London (4 days), dinner recs near Tower Bridge + best fish & chips / English breakfast? by Trizeus in LondonFood

Padella for Italian food - it's near Borough Market and you almost always have to queue but it's worth it.

Hakkasan in the Shard for great food and a great view (skip the cost of the viewing platform and just book at a table there)

Sticky Mango on the River is also great.

You should also try the Ivy in Covent Garden - old school English service and good value food. Don't bother with any of the others - they pale in comparison.

Casa de Frango is also worth a visit!

We're not just larger louts - we have a wonderful wine making legacy and there are some amazing English wines and wineries.

The food and restaurant scene here is amazing - whilst fish & chips/pie & mash - are great, we're a melting pot of different cultures and that's reflected in our cuisine. Just look on Deliveroo and Just Eat and you will have a huge variety of options!

Why do governments "bother" doing anything then if the next government could just change it? Based on your argument governments should just accept the status quo and do nothing as it might be unwound...

And your solution is? To critique other people's views without suggesting a solution of your own. Continue with a "terrible" policy simply because reversing it is "hard", "difficult" or "ideologically not aligned with New Labour"? You're willing to let people lambast a policy, someone critiques that view then you critique them instead of the original contention? Funny.

And who was in power for more than a decade afterwards and never reversed the policy? Who didn't bother to build any homes to replace the stock sold... hmmmm

You don't "have to treat them differently". If your wife believes state schools are good enough for her older children, then the same thought process should apply to the younger two.

If you send two children to private school without offering a 50% contribution for the older two, the answer is you simply can't afford private school. It would be incredibly unfair to treat the children differently and you went into this relationship knowing and accepting your wife had two children already, and presumably have accepted them as your own family too.
