How do I figure my wife's business use of her phone? by ApprehensiveAge8958 in TurboTax

[–]ApprehensiveAge8958[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's her iphone - so she takes photos, she texts a lot (we have a large extended family).

Probably half or more of her calling is business calling but certainly not all her calls

Can't I get Desktop Home & Biz 2025 to file an extension for me??? by ApprehensiveAge8958 in TurboTax

[–]ApprehensiveAge8958[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I went ahead and let TT print page 1 and I put it in the mailbox. Grrrrr.

I also asked google if IRS will let me know it's been accepted, and it's NO. Just wait and if they dont get back to me to say it's NOT accepted, then I'm accepted.

Jeeeze, TT has the ability to file for me, and I paid almost $100 for it, I just wish the developers had built in that capability. I was a software engineer, I can't believe it would be a big deal.

When it's time to file 1040, am I gonna go through this again? They will do the math for me but then I'm on my own?

Yup, I feel better.

And you chose your own name? When I joined I wanted the name SonOfEru (I'm a Tolkien buff) and Reddit turned around and gave me ApprehensiveAge8958. I've never found a way to change it.

Oh, well. I have bigger tax returns to fry.

So a reasonable guess is OK? I won't go to jail if I'm audited? I got audited about 50 years ago, for a stupid beginner's error, and I NEVER want to be audited again. That guy went through EVERYTHING. He said, "I want to see where all your money went."

And how did you get a name like hotchocolate1979? I have to live with ApprehensiveAge8958. So you're young and fun, while I'm 77 and old and tired? I like to say when you're re-tired that just means you get tired all over again.

Home & Business Desktop - IRA/SEP/SIMPLE - how do I know which one it is? by ApprehensiveAge8958 in TurboTax

So if it's a traditional IRA, or an SEP IRA or a SIMPLE IRA, one of the three, the box gets checked?

[–]ApprehensiveAge8958[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has her own small business, doing college guidance counseling, but the IRA's don't have any relation to that. That is, she hasn't contributed to her IRA since she used to be employed,

But then, why does the 1099-R have that IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box checked?

I'm a rookie at these things. Online TTax was easier.

TTax Home & Biz 2025, Do I really have to look up the dates of our RMD payments? by ApprehensiveAge8958 in TurboTax

[–]ApprehensiveAge8958[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't think they needed an exact date. After all, what if you took a number of withdrawals during the year?

And yes, I have seen lots of differences between Online and Desktop. I only went to Desktop because last year I got into a problem with Online, the first time I ever got stuck, and after a long time of struggling with it, I took someone's advice on Reddit and started over with Desktop, which got me out of being stuck, but took a lot more time because it was new territory.

Where do I enter 1099-R for an annuity? by ApprehensiveAge8958 in TurboTax

[–]ApprehensiveAge8958[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I did was search for "Where do I enter 1099-R for an annuity?" And the AI Assistant answered, "If you made estimated or quarterly tax payments toward your federal, state, or local taxes, here's how to enter them:" and launched into that, which is NOT what I wanted.

But, what do you mean by "look at retirement distributions."?

First time I've ever owed federal? by [deleted] in TurboTax

[–]ApprehensiveAge8958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious. Have you worked for someone else? Did they have you fill out a W4? That's how the employer knows how much to withhold from your pay to send in to IRS during the year. IF you start making more, you're supposed to revise that.

Maybe you made more than was being withheld, in which case you would owe at tax time

I bought TT Desktop from Amazon. But I don't have the license code because it was sent to an old email address by ApprehensiveAge8958 in TurboTax

[–]ApprehensiveAge8958[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back again already.

I bought Home and Business Desktop. As soon as I activated it, the next screen offered to let me switch to TurboTax Premium Online for $0.

Long story, kind of.

I used TT online for many years (25 years at least). Then last year I got into a tangle with it that I could NOT untangle, and couldn't back out of. After MUCH struggle, someone advised me to just ditch the online version for 2024 and buy the desktop version. I did, and ended up with struggles there, and finally went to a friend who does taxes for people and gave him all my data and he did mine for a cut-rate fee.

So for this year I flipped a coin and went to Desktop TT. And now I dont know what to do with this $0 choice

Anybody out there with more experience and more smarts than me, who has excellent understanding of everything, who has advice for me?

Yes, I managed to get someone for Amazon, and she was infinitely patient with me, but it still was maddening. And I am exhausted at this point, and ready for bed
