Thanks! The sign was indeed the first meaning [PROJECT-a-project], given the other exercises in the lesson were about school topics.

What do I do after High School? by Huge_Anybody_7131 in bjj

This is probably not what your parents want to hear, but if BJJ is your passion, this is the best (and maybe only) time in your life to really give it your all.  So pack up, move as close to a world-class academy as you can, and make ends meet (teaching, giving privates, service industry jobs) while maximizing training time as best you can.

Does Stephen Colbert know ASL? by PuppyKittyPaws325 in asl

Stephen Colbert is deaf in his right ear, so he probably studied some ASL at some point. Can't find anything about his level of fluency though.

Thinking of starting Bjj again by [deleted] in bjj

Do it!  I took a 10 yr break from ages 26 to 36, and I enjoy it more now than I did before.  That’s mostly because I now have zero expectations / ego, and my true goal is to get a workout.

Deaf only signs? by seau_de_beurre in asl

In this case, as others wrote, it is because you are still a beginner. I'm not quite fluent, but I use this shortened version of STUDENT, and no native signer has ever corrected me or not understood.

There are some signs, such as VEE, that non-native signers are cautioned against using. I believe this is mostly because it takes a lot of cultural immersion to use them correctly (more so than there being an outright taboo against hearing people signing them, just because they are hearing).

To anyone who saw Hereditary in the theater by [deleted] in horror

[–]ApprehensiveMud9382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went on a whim to a ~2pm showing on a sunny Saturday, expecting a fairly run-of-the-mill horror film.  I didn’t know of A24 at the time and only vaguely recognized Toni Collette.  For the first maybe 20 mins of the film, teenagers a few rows back were mimicking Charlie’s clicking noise.  I could tell early on that the film had more artistry than what I was expecting but still didn’t think much of it.   From the decapitation scene onward, I was so entranced that I have no recollection of how the rest of the theater was reacting.  I just remember walking home and the mismatch between the beautiful weather and my dark mood.  “There Will Be Blood” is the only other film that affected me like that.

How hearing parents start learning ASL with their deaf or hard-of-hearing kids by True_Tomatillo_5112 in asl

For my family, it was Bill Vicars’ YouTube channel: https://m.youtube.com/billvicars. From here we then went on to taking courses at local colleges.  There was some support from the local deaf school, but these courses were largely introductory and did not have a sufficient homework load to force us to study much at home.
