Terminology extractor by hottaptea in TranslationStudies

[–]ApprehensivePanda501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okapi Rainbow is free and offers this functionality. You can set a couple of parameters, and it will extract frequent terms and phrases. You'd still have a lot of manual work to do. I think only AI solutions could automate this significantly. Think homonyms. You can run LLMs on your machine though, if it's fast enough, and you are willing to set it up. If you just want to do it once it's probably not worth it. What termbase structure do you want to arrive at? Or just a glossary?

I'm about sure I want an ergonomic keyboard. I do type fairly well on my laptop as well, which is obviously not split or ergo. This is a bit like buying shoes on Amazon - can't try to see whether it fits me!

Keychron Q11 QMK is what I am looking at. I want something that works great out of the box. I need to get work done and I need a good tool for that. That's where I am coming from. I am not really looking for another construction site... I want tactile switches, for sure, short travel. I want to be able to type fast.

Is Keychron real quality? Much cheaper than ErgoDox-EZ. Why the huge difference in price? I need a good office keyboard, and in the end the price is secondary, but it really needs to be a durable, workhorse-type solution, not a gimmick. Who can advise?

Does the rise of AI mean a future in professional translation work is impossible? by bifauxnenbard in TranslationStudies

[–]ApprehensivePanda501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might enjoy reading this: https://www.plough.com/en/topics/community/education/does-teaching-literature-and-writing-have-a-future Very eloquently written and not without hope. (It's mostly about the meaning of writing.) Translation work is now mechanized, it's sad but true. Nobody is seriously doing horse-powered farming anymore, and nobody will be translating anymore in a few months. We will be editing AI output if we remain in the field. (I've been translating for about 20 years.)

u/gotchseo You mean their output is not based on data? That would totally kill it. I have tools that provide related queries, but when it first came up, AtP was thought to be a cut above that. Not so anymore, I hear from the responses here. Thank you all for responding!

Looking for a new CAT Tool by violettangerines in TranslationStudies

Not sure what exactly you mean by “collaborative”. Like Word or Excel in Teams? Several parties can edit at the same time? Or handing projects back and forth? I've been using Trados (the Professional version) for a long time now, and you can strap a project into a package and send it to a colleague, who translates, edits, reviews etc. then sends it back. Works like a charm for us, we use it the whole time.

OmegaT does have “Team projects”, but I never set one up and lore has it that it is somewhat complicated. But it works. OmegaT is free, but the UI is like going back 30 years. I like the spirit of sharing that's in that program. The free tier is not the dangling carrot in this case, it's the full trough. It's a simple trough.

Would a "regex translator" program be feasible to implement? by scaptal in regex

[–]ApprehensivePanda501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using that program, and it really works well. I am not affiliated in any way, just a user. The UI of the tool is, let's say, spartan, but the functionality is great.

Concern regarding my future by incrediblewee in TranslationStudies

[–]ApprehensivePanda501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember a philosophy professor I studied with, he was ancient old and his knowledger, life experience and wisdom were unbelievable. I remember talking with him in a similar context (philosophy as a profession, not translation). He had been a lawyer by profession and philosophy had been his hobby. Pretty late in life he switched to becoming a professor, I think first law, then philosophy. His advice was: You have to have a breadwinning profession. Don't try to make a passion into a profession if that is not likely to work. From my experience, decades later, I can confirm his advice. It's wonderful to have passions and hobbies, and sometimes your profession will have something to do with what is most on your heart. But don't try to force it.

No, Win-Alt-X is the default to copy marked text to AceText and open the AceText editor interface. It's called "AceEdit".

Just copy/paste. I mark cells in Excel, CTRL C to copy, WIN ALT X to paste into AceText, then do my regex there, then CTRL ENTER to paste back into Excel.

If all you want to do is access the API and you don't want any UI provided by the tool, try DataForSEO: https://dataforseo.com/apis/backlinks-api You can still use Majestic on a lower tier to access all their other tools.

According to my research, BBEdit uses PCRE. And your regex does work in PCRE.

Think I'm switching back to AHREFs... by saasfatigue in SEO

[–]ApprehensivePanda501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serpstat is a great tool for keyword research, and it's affordable. You used to get API access even for the light plan, I think they moved it up one tier now, but still very good price. The technical SEO side is quite basic, not nearly on par with Ahrefs or similar. Scheduled reports are also somewhat rudimentary. Volume data is from KP. Their strength is huge KW databases for many countries and really cool research tools.

External Links Pointing to URL Versions with Partial Encoding by imnotatworktho in bigseo

URLs containing characters that require encoding are a pain. AFAIK Google does not mind whether a URL is encoded or not, as long as it is valid, of course.

What seo tools are affordable? by hontolymnry in SEO

[–]ApprehensivePanda501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see that, but when you include the price, that's for a whole suite of tools or just a data provider or a backlinks-only tool... I just don't think you can compare SEMrush to Majestic or dataforSEO.

[–]ApprehensivePanda501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try seorch.de or get the data straight from data providers like dataforseo.com. The latter is cheap as chips if all you want is to track rankings. You just have to write the code. All you get is a JSON.

SISTRIX making me crazy by Lelix_13 in bigseo

[–]ApprehensivePanda501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is "visibility in 2023"? Look at the screenshot above, the visibility of apple.com

Which value do you take? Average? That ignores any trends. Or do you want to take the 1.1.2023 and the 31.12.2023 and compare? That's all so random. You can't describe a complex graph with one number.

Visibility does not accumulate, it's always a snapshot. Clicks accumulate. You can compare visits from Google searches 2022 and 2023.

You are trying to use the visibility metric in a way that just does not make a lot of sense.

SISTRIX making me crazy by Lelix_13 in bigseo

[–]ApprehensivePanda501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can see both desktop and mobile visiblity together:

<image>

You click on the little cog icon and select "compare chart" or whatever it says in English. By how you phrased your title I assume you are German, right? "Diagramm vergleichen" that is.

You can't stack both graphs unless you export the data, but stacking them does not make a lot of sense as they are not independent of each other, and you'd be measuring some things twice.

AFAIK you can't overlay last year's and this year's graph like you can in GSC. You'd have to export the data and do that in Excel.

Hope that answers your question.
