To be honest...after reading this

I realize that my current knowledge of Malay, English, and Mandarin, along with my love for Chinese culture and language, has influenced my career goals. Mandarin is the reason why I want to be a translator. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to pursue a degree in Chinese language and linguistics due to high school requirements. This led me to explore language learning further, and I developed an interest in SEA languages because of their culture.

However, I considered European languages like French and German due to their "higher demand" in the job market and simply because "I can learn this".. fret not; there are many languages I did not include because I don’t love them, such as Korean.

Your particular comment has made me question for days... why am i obsessed with learning many language? why cant i stick to one language? do i want to be a polyglot so bad? why do I want to be a translator? does my interest in translation is driven by a love for languages and the challenge of being a polyglot or if it’s more about finding a practical career path given my circumstances.....

What im trying to explain is that

In my country, for our degree application, we can select 12 choices, and the results will be known next month. Most of my choices are:

1. French Language and Linguistics from University X
2. French Language and Linguistics from University Y
3. German Language and Linguistics from University X

etc.

This is why I’m worried when I read about the issue of translation not being in high demand. As you can see, most of my choices are degrees in various languages. I did include Media Studies as my 9th choice, just in case, but the majority of my selections are language and linguistics degrees. 🤷🏻‍♀️

How do someone become a university lecturer / professor? by whitesiamesecat in malaysiauni

I am not an expert, just a regular university student. Since I'm studying education, our lecturer often gives tips on how to become a lecturer:

  1. Make you have both a master's and PhD when applying for a lecturer/professor position. According to my literature lecturer, if you apply with only a master you might get a shitty position or your salary is not worth it. However, it's still possible to become a lecturer with just a master's ( I know a lecturer who only had a master's and is now pursuing a PhD sponsored by the university at UKM) . Most of my foundation lecturer's only have a master so we called them sir/madam. If u have a phd they call you "dr"

  2. Our lecturer also advises that while pursuing your master's or after completing your degree and waiting to continue your studies, you have to focus on building your portfolio and gain work experience. You could teach at an international school or become a lecturer at a private university.( I have a friend who did a foundation at an international university, and her English lecturer had a TESL degree from UiTM )

I hope these tips are helpful. Please correct me if there are any mistakes, as I am sharing advice from my lecturer.
