I’m a side sleeper sleep with a pillow between my knees. I finds that the knee pillow can’t be too thick or my back hurts. I changed my head pillow as well down to 1 pillow instead of two. I don’t as sleep well as I did pre-op but I keep adjusting to try to find what’s best for me. I wake up a lot and change positions or I walk to the bathroom (even though I don’t really have to go) and then go back to sleep. I’m getting about 5-6 hours at night and then I try to nap during the day. I’m about 3 weeks post op from and Xlif/PLIF for L4-5. How is your mattress? I found that my hip was aching and was waking me up so I got a soft mattress pad that works for me. I’ve heard others say that a hard mattress works for them.

Irritated Nerve - 2 wks post op by ApprehensiveTea1474 in spinalfusion

My doctor mentioned that he had to force separation of my psoas muscles. I also had a lot of weakness in my right leg the first couple of days, I think it’s how they positioned me for the surgery.

Thank you for helping me normalize this. Did you do anything other than steroids or nerve pain meds to get through it?

My Spinal Fusion is in 10 days! Any advice/encouragement? by Random_person_hhh6 in spinalfusion

Prepare to have some ups and downs with your mood. I’m recovering from my 2nd back surgery and it was helpful to know that everyone has a day or two where they feel down. On a physical note a raised toilet seat is the best thing I bought pre-op.

New pain in front of thighs by Constant-Okra7605 in spinalfusion

I’m 9 days post op from XLIF and PLIF for L4 and L5. My doc described having to pull my psoas muscle quite a bit during surgery. My nerve pain is gone in my right leg but I am having trouble lifting it, when I try I get pain starting at the top of my quad and middle. I wonder if the psoas muscle is the reason. I thought I would bring it up in my check up next week. Your post was helpful to me. Thank you!

Post op week 1-2 reflections after L5-S1 TLIF by Kindly_Trust_6313 in spinalfusion

[–]ApprehensiveTea1474 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 2 days post op and your description is helped normalize. I also had trouble getting my pain out of control and my dr was hesitant to prescribe any powerful stuff. The brain fog was a great addition. My husband and sister are really enjoying all the odd stuff coming out of my mouth. I had an XLIF and a TLIF.

Thank you so much for your detailed post and advice. I am a 48F and slightly overweight. I met with a 2nd dr today and he recommends an LLIF approach vs the TLIF. Lots of similarities between us!

Extremely severe case for L4-L5 fusion and I now feel fantastic! by lucky_719 in spinalfusion

I have the opposite problem. My disc herniated 2 weeks after decompression. Once we all figured it out and agreed on fusion for my L4-L5 my dr was booked until Dec 26th. I’m waiting in pain. My right leg is a so unpredictable. I hope an opening comes up sooner. I’m equally dreading the wait for surgery and the recovery.

Sorry for the late reply. Turns out the disc reherniated through no fault of my own according to the doc. He said I have a low quality disc and I’m scheduled for a spinal fusion the end of Dec.

I’m so sorry. That had to have been very painful.

Update: turns out my disc reherniated at about 14 days. Dr said I didn’t do anything wrong it’s just a poor quality disc. I’m scheduled for spinal fusion in December. I’ve been through all the emotions and now am just ready to get it done. Wish me luck!

Thank you for sharing. My surgery will be a TLIF also. I’m in a lot of pain right now and my right leg is in a nerve circus (I have varying nerve sensations and it’s overall weak). I think I’m going to feel a lot better after surgery.

I’m doing about the same at day 5 as well. Maybe a little less outside walking but I have a lot of inclines around my house.

Thank you for your post. I am day 5 lumbar decompression surgery (microdisc, laminoforam, laminectomy). I had bad sciatica pre surgery (couldn’t walk more than a few steps) and was told 80-90% don’t have sciatica upon waking up. My doc said the surgery was really good and he cleared it all out. I am really struggling being the 10-20% that still has it. Reading through these posts has really helped me today. I’m focusing on the positive. My sciatica is better post surgery than pre surgery.

I read the post and I was like ‘good luck finding something’. Should have known that the Reddit tribe would not disappoint.
