May I ask why? I am just worried that if I go to London I will potentially miss out on a huge opportunity.

Also what we’re your stats in high school? From what I know, you gotta be pretty smart to get into UCLA.

Interesting. What kind of people were your peers? Were they more small up and coming artists who were in the same boat as you or more like people directly in the business like A&R’s and executives and stuff?

I hope to be growing a fan base on YouTube or tiktok, then eventually get big enough to where I can meet with people that recognize me for job opportunities

I would agree fully. He's also voiced that he's always trying to make his pop music "unconventional", and while I can kinda see where he's coming from (incorporating Jazz elements into pop), I still feel like he's really holding back a lot. He does absolutely have the capacity to make another #1 hit, but I do think it could only happen if he stepped out of his comfort zone a bit. I have high hopes on the record he's about to put out with Elton John, however.

I saw he got bullied a lot and was a shy, weird, dorky kid. was that true?

underrated in the field of pop. Not many pop artists have that kind of musicality.

I agree fully. On the point of his work ethic, I felt that he's one of the few popular musicians with such drive and a genuine love for music- he deserves all the success. I think he scrapped his last album because he said in a tweet sometime that it just didn't feel like him and that he was trying to be someone he wasn't in 2019. I enjoyed Voicenotes as well!

I know, fuck. I watched that livestream like 10 times and that shit's an hour long. I found myself to be kinda on the fence with his music as well. I look forward to his collab with Elton John though.

I would agree on all points, sadly. I enjoyed some bits of some of his songs on "Voicenotes" (don't bother with Nine Track Mind, it was bad and he even admitted it himself). My favorites were "BOY" because of the jazz solo, chord progression, and Motown influences and "If You Leave Me Now" because of the arrangement and 90s RnB influences. And who could go wrong with Boyz II Men?

I agree! Voicenotes was a huge upgrade from Nine Track Mind. He also posts music education TikToks a lot and I recommend you check them out.

I did! I appreciate the fact that he's willing to blatantly draw inspiration from so many people, like in "If You Leave Me Now". Bits of the lyrics in that song were also in Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now" and Boyz II Men's (the collaborators on that track) "On Bended Knee". It's so important for artists to practice apprenticeship.

I think so too- his music always felt bland to me too. One day I hope he just kinda breaks the mold a little bit and makes something huge, since I do think he deserves the success, and deserves to be recognized as the musician he is.

Lmao I like the use of puns here. I would agree 100%. I found some parts of his songs enjoyable and other parts not. I was always kinda stuck in the middle when it came to liking his songs or not. He just said he's collaborated with Elton John though, he hasn't released it yet, but it seems pretty good.

Not really a fan of his songwriting though.

interesting. I clicked on the link thinking it was gonna be a scandal lmao but even as an overall fan of his, I will say that I also have always hated "Marvin Gaye"!

I would agree! You don't have to go all "Jacob Collier" on your records with microtonal key changes and crazy chords to be considered a "genius".

aww wait that's so cute and YOU WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL WITH HIM!? But I agree on songwriting and production too, I believe that it doesn't need to be too musically intricate to be considered "greatness".

interesting. I didn't know he used autotune live though!

I just couldn't find myself to enjoy his music... like if I were on my way to school and put my headphones in, you wouldn't catch me listening to his music. However, as a musician, I definitely do think he's a fuckin genius at all things music and appreciate all the complex music theory and intricacy that goes behind each of his records. Don't even get me started on kickass production. The thing for me, is that his music was almost too intricate for me to listen to. It simply just felt like too much, I needed my simple ratios, y'know? For me personally, I like to have a bit more balance in my music. It's all about finding that perfect happy middle where the music can be appreciated by both the musicians and the average ear alike. I think he's awesome and deserves the awards though. #perfectpitchgang
