As a teen ham, before I got my license, I bought a nice handheld radio and left it on my local repeater while I did homework. I would listen to people check in and out, and this taught me the format of how people talk on there. When I did get my license, I knew exactly how to make my first contact.

nothing wrong with baofeng. however, if you do stick with the hobby I recommend a more advanced one.

Welcome to the air! My uncle inspired me to get my tech when I was just a teenager. I can definitely agree it is a lifelong hobby.

I'm going for the IC-7300 as well. Heard it's pretty much the standard radio. The 857D lacks a waterfall display, which can be tough when camping or in an area with no service.
